Lieutenant-Commander Ian “Crash” McLaren, who has died aged 67 of complications arising from diabetes, led a prize crew onboard the freighter Monsunen during the Falklands War and later became a civil servant.
Early in 1982, Fearless was being prepared for the summer cruise of the Dartmouth Training Squadron and McLaren was chosen as the instructor for the young officers onboard, when, following the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands, she was rapidly returned to her primary role as an amphibious assault ship.

Rest in peace.
