Grace Meng (D-NY) announced today that she reintroduced legislation in the House of Representatives to lower the voting age in America to 16 years old.

Meng’s measure seeks to replace the 26th amendment to the United States Constitution with a new amendment that would allow 16- and 17-year-olds to vote.

I don't think we need a constitutional amendment, but if some states want to lower their voting ages to 16, I'm fine with that.

It could be good to have more input from current public school students, since the government plays such a large role in education.

This effort seems unlikely to do much other than grab attention, I doubt it makes it out of committee let alone becomes something that changes the Constitution.

Too soon. Too many teens are impressionable, impulsive, and ill-informed about the real-world.

at first i was all on board with this but then i thought i don't think that would survive constitutionality since its voting
eventually, after challenges, discussions and what not i think it would have to be national or not at all IMO

seems to me that would be like letting a race or gender do something in one state but not another

anyway i do like the idea of them having more power over their education especially since its under attack

I disagree. Not too long ago, the idea of society accommodating people who identify as someone of the opposite sex seemed "doubtful" if not unheard of.

The Constitution, as-is, only has a few voting-related prohibitions:
- No discrimination based on race.
- No discrimination based on sex.
- No discrimination based on age, as long as the voter is at least 18.
- No poll taxes.

My reading of that is that a state does not need a constitutional amendment if they want to lower the voting age below 18. They just can't raise it above 18, or put a voting age maximum in place.

hence why i said

there's no argument from me that a state could or couldn't do it right now my point is i don't think it would survive in state form if done since it deals with voting in the long run similar to marriage and things of that nature
seems like a grey area that doesn't make it, but again I'm for them having more say especially in education

If you watch some of those trump rally interviews you would want older people not voting.

Hell no.

Don't let this girl vote. (Or any of the people in her video.)

Disclaimer: I don't know if that girl is 16, but she certainly acts like it.

And don't let this kid vote, either.

In fact, anyone who watches Dr. Phil shouldn't be allowed to vote, either.

They are less likely to get mad because someone played an old flute or wearing a mask for a few months, in that way they are more rational than many adults.

Thinking about it, I am fine with them voting at that age.

I’d be willing to let school students participate in local elections - much like some communities have allowed legal immigrants that are not eligible to vote in state/federal elections to vote at a local level.

Specifically school board and town level elections that directly impact them.

But state/federal? No.

Of course! They have the people under 40 convinced in the necessity of socialism and the evils of capitalism, so now is the time to stick the knife in. Give the vote to 16 year olds while the entire education system has been coopted by Leftists, and they win - checkmate.

16? I was active in the anti-war movement -politically aware, but I was also fooling around with Mao's Little Red Book
(that i soon tossed in the garbage).. i had no real world experence - Alice Cooper summed it up

'Ive got a
Baby's brain and an old man's heart
Took eighteen years to get this far
Don't always know what I'm talkin' about
Feels like I'm livin' in the middle of doubt
'Cause I'm
Eighteen

I get confused every day
Eighteen
I just don't know what to say
Eighteen
I gotta get away

I'm not a fan. Voting is for adults

Other.

16 ?

Pshaw!!!

Why not 12?

This country is already going insane (jaywalking in California is now fine & dandy).

They can barely drive and you want to let them vote? I'm sure it's a democrat thing because they know kids make poor decisions which would lead them to vote for democrats if promised goodies!

Gee bud, by that logic all the old farts brainwashed by decades of Cold War lies shouldn’t be allowed to vote either since they think anything to the left of Pinochet is “communism” ;)

The Left wants them to be able to opt in to sex change operations without parental consent. Voting is a given.

Other than the fact that old farts have been around a while, whereas a 16 year old is still trying to find his way around the neighborhood.

Yes. Increased suffrage is a good thing.
