Low crime in El Paso predates 'wall'; smugglers are U.S. citizens

EL PASO, Texas, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- The safety of El Paso, Texas, has become a standard talking point for the Trump administration in its quest to spend $5.7 billion for a wall along the border with Mexico.

"El Paso, Texas, went from one of the most unsafe parts or cities in the United States to one of the safest cities in the United States as soon as they put up the wall," Trump said last week. "They built a wall and fencing apparatus that blocked people. So they went from one of the most dangerous cities to one of the safest cities, all within a very short period of time."

El Paso does have comparatively low crime -- as do many border cities, which are prospering economically. But the dip in crime predates the "wall" and much of the drug smuggling across the border is done by U.S. citizens crossing at legal points of entry.

Do you want to know something about snapping your fingers to prevent elephant stampedes in Central Park?

You know that it works because there aren't any elephant stampedes in Central Park.
Right?

The mayor of El Paso disagrees... The border wall has been in El Paso since 2008 and according to him it works.

Sounds to me like the problem for El Paso isn't a lack of a border barrier/fencing because they have one.
The problem according to the Mayor of El Paso is there is a lack of holding facilities which then forces illegal aliens to be let go in El Paso. He's calling on congress to fix the broken immigration system.

The mayor of El Paso, Texas, called on lawmakers in Washington, D.C., to finally do something to address the many problems with the nation's immigration system.

Earlier this week, ICE released hundreds of migrants into the city, as the government struggles to detain illegal immigrants amid an influx of Central Americans trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border.

Mayor Dee Margo (R) said on "America's Newsroom" Friday there have been about 24,000 migrants released into El Paso since October, five times more than 2017.

He said the city has an agreement with federal authorities that they will notify an NGO called Annunciation House, which helps the migrants obtain food and shelter for 96 hours before they're transported to sponsors elsewhere in the country.

Margo said there was a breakdown in communication before Wednesday's release and the NGO did not know the migrants would be coming.

"It was a surprise, yes, and it was in violation of our agreement with them," said Margo, explaining that the migrants are having to be released due to overcrowding at federal facilities.

He said the bottom line is that U.S. immigration policy "stinks" and lawmakers have refused to address the situation for years.

"It's about time somebody steps up and develops a little manhood along the way and determines what they need to do irrespective of the political fallout," he said, adding that a "myriad" of issues must be dealt with.

Margo said he doesn't like the term border "wall" but there has been a fence on the El Paso-Mexico border since 2008 and it has worked.

"Something's gotta give. We need a rational process to deal with DACA, legal immigration and the migrant population coming north and claiming asylum.

So what problems El Paso are having aren't related to "The Wall" they are related to the other parts of the immigration system that "The Wall" isn't going to do anything to fix.

In that case, the obvious thing to do is to build "The Wall".

That is correct, the wall or a barrier should be built where there is none. The mayor of ElPaso stated that the wall is working!!

This is true in general. The reason the wall is so easy to be against is because the justifications used for it are complete garbage. Most Americans understand that hence its unpopularity.

Democrats do not hesitate to call their own officials liars and racists if they will not chant the party line.

Since the government is spending a billion dollars a day on the shutdown, the Democratic Party now has thrown away the entire cost of the extra 300 miles Trump wants to add to the Pelosi-Schumer 700 mile barrier. Democrats in Congress are now burning a billion dollars a day and all the harms of the shut down not to avoid paying for the wall - but spending a billion a day not to have the border barrier after already burning the entire cost of it for absolutely nothing in return.

The shutdown is no different that if Pelosi backed up a drum truck with $1 billion in it and dumped it in a fire - every day, day after day, week after week.

Why? To prove to Latinos that the loyalty of the Democratic Party is to Mexicans, Central Americans and South Americans is so great they will burn billions of dollars and cause any harm to Americans and the USA for that loyalty.

The arguments against a border barrier are ludicrous and anyone can quote Obama, Pelosi and Schumer in the past to prove it.

The arguments against the wall are generally so absurd they are like jokes. Here is an analogy to the logic:

"Statistically a far greater percentage of murders and rapes are committed by people not in prison than in prison. Therefore, people in prisons are the safest of all and all should be let into society for how safe they are."

27% of federal prisoners are illegal immigrants - so therefore it is proven they commit less crimes because they aren't in prison.

Here are the actual claims:

1. A person can run across a football field carrying a 30 foot ladder and scaling a 30 foot wall up and down just as fast and sneakily as a person can just run across a football field.

2. Anyone can dig a 100 yard tunnel exactly as fast as a person could run across a football field.

Those literally are the arguments made by the Democratic Party against Trump's 300 miles of barrier they want - but none apply to the 700 miles of Pelosi-Schumer border barrier.

The Democrats aren't responsible for the shutdown. McConnell's subservience to Trump is the culprit. I'm not against strategically placed barriers/walls. I'm against the childlike idea of building one long stretch of wall along the border and justifying it by saying it would stop the problems that mostly occur at legal points of entry.

Do you have links to back up that statement?

Mr. Trump now says that there is no need for a wall where "natural barriers" (like the Rio Grande) already exist.

Um - the analogy is IN FACT an analogy. That disposes of the "Statistically ... in prison." bit.

Whether the analogy is an accurate one is something else again.

However, I have never seen any "Democrat" actually make either of the two numbered claims.

Not only that, but "literally" means "in fact" and I have never seen any "Democrat" ACTUALLY make either of the two numbered claims.

I, too, eagerly await "joko104" providing some ACTUAL evidence that some ACTUAL "Democrat" has ACTUALLY made EITHER of the two numbered claims.

PS - I'm not holding my breath while waiting.
