When you order/buy lobster, do you typically go for the tail/tails only, or do you go for the entire lobster?

Other than the claws, is there any reason to get the whole lobster?

How do you cook? Boil? Steam? Chowder? Other?????

Let's hear it for some LOBSTER!!!!

When I order it I go for tail only. However, when I buy it I go for the living, fresh lobster, so, whole.

Depends on what kind of lobster it is. If its the Maine red lobsters then they have claws and thats good eating so you need to buy the whole thing. Or the spiny lobsters dont have any claws to speak of so its all tail.

I just boil then in saltwater and use lemon with melted butter. Of course the sides matter so boiled corn, potato salad/french fries, onion rings and coleslaw are a must.

When I was a kid I used to eat it with melted butter/mayo/old bay/tabasco concoction for a sauce.

I never really buy lobster. If I'm going to splurge, I'll get crab since it has a better flavor, imo. If lobster were cheaper, I'd eat it more often. So far, I've only had it once or twice. It just doesn't seem to have a huge, huge flavor. I prefer crawfish/crayfish over all of them, however.

It's a sea roach, don't eat it at all.

Arthropods are disgusting.

Its a crustacean, not a roach. Just because it shares the same phyla doesnt mean its an insect.

Disgusting, uncivilized sea bug. It's done nothing to raise itself above the level of other insects.

Oh yeah - mud bugs are good!

It has an open circulatory system. Disgusting.

So? Have you ever seen the insides of a human being or a cow? Innards of any kind of animal are disgusting if you think about it.

Yes it has- it tastes great! Thats the only thing that counts!

Closed circulatory system, much more civilized.

I am being slightly facetious with the whole thing. But I am philosophically opposed to eating arthropods. I also refuse to eat mollusks except for cephalopods.

How do you feel about bivalves? I had some really tasty mussels, and shrimp - another tasty sea bug - with linguine in marinara sauce for dinner last night with a nice cabernet.

Nope. Mollusks are filters, they concentrate all the crap that's in the water into their flesh. I won't eat liver either for this reason.

I've actually never eaten lobster. Is it better than crab?

Not in my opinion. I've had lot's of Dungeness crab in my life (the best crab there is and yes, that includes the overgrown, under-flavored stuff they catch on TV). I've just never been all that impressed with lobster. For the most part, there just isn't that much flavor to it (kind of like King crab and Snow crab). Now you get good fresh Dungie (yes, you do clean them before you cook them if you have any sense of taste) and you'll never even consider spending money on any other type of "water bug" (except for maybe a big mess of cajun style crawdads).

For a socialist, you've got good taste in shellfish.

Ah you know not what you're missing. (yeah and I eat liver as well - though not often).

Since you're from Colorado how do you feel about Rocky Mountain Oysters?

Oh, I know what I'm "missing". A few years ago I was Maryland and partook in a healthy heaping of blue crab. Was the last time I had arthropod. It was far too reminiscent of high school biology.

I've always found that reminders of dissection aid my appetite, rather than hinder it. But that's just me, I suppose...

Yup, can't recall frogs legs tasting any different because I dissected them in lab at one time.

I do not know as I have never eaten crab
But spring lobster is the best, from the cold Atlantic waters. Later in the season the lobster molts, and you have less meat.

Last year moulting lobsters were seen in April in Maine, and in June in Nova Scotia. “Shedders,” as they’re called, are normally seen in June in Maine and later in the summer in Nova Scotia.

Lobsters are most marketable before they moult because their shells are hard and full of meat. When they moult, they slip out of their old shells and are worth far less, since they are fragile and can’t be shipped long distances.

My God man, the only thing that goes with lobster, aside from good beer or wine, is another lobster.
Grew up on PEI, and each spring, season opens, dad would head to the wharf, see a fisherman, and buy it right off the boat.
When I was older, did the same thing. Cook the lobster, plates full, slice open a large garbage bag or 2, place on the table, place newspaper down. Eat till you are full. Roll up the bag and such and off it went.
You knew you were full when there was lobster still left for the next days supper.
