Back in the ’80s when, on a couple of occasions, I visited the Soviet Union, I always wondered what was it really like to live in that godforsaken place. But it didn’t much matter. For all the creepy spying that was going on, I realized I’d be out of there in a week or two.

Now I know what it was like. It’s come home.

I live in fear.

I don’t want to admit it, but it’s true. Every phone call I make, every email I send, every text I message, every article I write including this one, I imagine being bugged or recorded.

1984 is here and it’s not pretty.

It infects everything we do.

For example, I want to criticize the IRS with every breath I take, but in the back of my head I worry — what if they come after me? What if I’m audited and have to spend the next few years and untold dollars on accountants and attorneys? Is this fair to my family? Is this how I want to spend my life?

I guess Winston Smith had it better than we do today as portrayed in the novel "1984". The technology was not that efficient then as it is today.

I don't think you know what true fascism is. Comparing us to Mussolini's Italy is kind of a stretch.

Is there someplace that sends you link to all these random idiot blogs? Do you get paid trying to get them exposure?

Of course it is beyond the word stretch. Just as Simon is beyond the word hack. This is what these people do. Now ask him why Nazi Fascist sympathizers in the Republikan party during the 1930's like Prescott Bush allowed Hitler to take over.

A lot of Simon's "divide this country" lunacy comes straight from Politico. In fact, many threads here on Debate Politics come straight from Politico.

You live in fear?

We would have never guessed.

<snicker.>

Oh yeah, liberals coming for your guns too! LOL!

The question begs to be answered.

Which is more acceptable?

A little socialism from the left or a little facism from the right?

I put it to the board. What say ye?

What a shame! I really feel sorry for you.

1. I live in fear.

2. I don’t want to admit it, but it’s true. Every phone call I make, every email I send, every text I message, every article I write including this one, I imagine being bugged or recorded.

3. It infects everything we do.

4. For example, I want to criticize the IRS with every breath I take, but in the back of my head I worry — what if they come after me? What if I’m audited and have to spend the next few years and untold dollars on accountants and attorneys? Is this fair to my family? Is this how I want to spend my life?

1. You do?
2. So what? How has that personally affected you or harmed you in anyway?
3. What does?
4. Go ahead. I've criticized lots of things mostly on this forum, and nobody has audited me.

The IRS investigation shows that a conservative republican was behind the entire thing. So you're right: conservatives can't be trusted with government.

Actually, to get totally partisan up in here, living in fear is probably one of the hallmarks of conservatives. They're afraid of stuff. They're afraid of change. They're afraid of other kinds of people. They're afraid of their neighbors so they need guns to protect themselves. They're afraid of the government. Liberals, by comparison, tend not to be scared all the time.

I'm sure Werwolf was against Bush passing the Patriot Act. NOT!

Hmm... Fascism and Mussolini? Here I thought Simon was equating his thoughts with the Soviet regime. Although they weren't as technically advanced as we are today. But as usual you bark up the wrong tree. It's Fascism/Marxism and Big Brother Simon is relating to. No wonder you failed 20th Century history.
I suggest you read the following:
"Old and New Fascism and the Revolutionary Tasks of the Proletariat"

Marxism International » Fascism, Old and New

Now you are mixing up Bolshevik Communism and Fascism.

Unlike you and Joe Biden, I have been consistent in my views about limiting the privacy and freedoms of Americans as written in the U.S.Constitution.

"He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither. ... He who gives up freedom for safety deserves neither" -- Benjamin Franklin

I don't think YOU understand what fascism is. It's not about Mussolini, or Italy. That's like saying that the Nazi party was only about killing Jews. A weak premise.

The reason people call 0bama a fascist is because of his insatiable craving for taking decisions out of the hands of the people, and imposing decisions by government fiat. By principle, fascism is allowing private entities to own businesses, but those entities are controlled by the government and that's exactly what 0bama is for. Governmental control of the economy. An iron fist around capitalism. A centralized oligarchy that farms subsidies as it sees fit, to control production.
