Does the US have a listed buildings system that protects important buildings?

In the UK we have this system

I think it's very important that the built history of the country is preserved so that everyone can enjoy it but do you agree or do you think this is overly sentimental?

I wasn't sure where to put this topic so mods, feel free to move this and delete this bit as you like.
 
Does the US have an equivalent to the National Trust that buys buildings and makes them open to the public?
