The American singer Linda Ronstadt got a taste of the acrimony of this polarised election year in the US when she was escorted from a Las Vegas casino after she had dedicated a song to the filmmaker Michael Moore.

Calling Moore a "great American patriot" and "someone who is seeking the truth," she urged her audience to see his film Fahrenheit 9/11.

But Bill Timmins, the manager of the Aladdin hotel-casino, took exception to the introduction of politics into the Nevada holiday city.

"It was a very ugly scene," Mr Timmins told the Associated Press. "She praised him and all of a sudden all bedlam broke loose."

Say anything you want - Freedom of speech. Be prepare for the consequences.

Remember all the conversations we've had about things working themselves out on the censorship front without government intervention?

This was a beautiful example.

OUTSTANDING.

The guy is just acting on building policy. Anyone who enters the premises have to abide by some rules and regulations. Like he said, she introduced politics into the casino. If she had said anything about voting for Bush, or about the war in Irak, she would have suffered the same consequences. Let's not jump into Mike's collar as most of you have done in the past. I know I'm not gonna get kicked out of the forum for saying:
Michael Moore is a great american patriot and is someone who is seeking the truth. I'm urging ya'll to go see his film Fahreinheit 9/11

There, I said it....

The part of the post you failed to read was the "all bedlam broke loose".

Folks got up and walked out - threw their drinks on her picture.

In order to maintain some type of stability - she was told to leave immediately.

Freedom of speech: Say whatever the heck you want. Be prepare for the consequences of said statement.

Last time I checked Casinos were private establishments. They have the right to run there own shows.
Just Like the Dixie Diks talking trash about Bush. They have the right to say what they want and we have the right not to buy their CDs. Dallas Texas has 3 country radio stations I listen to. None of them are playing the Dixie Diks, They had an online poll to see if the listners wanted them to start playing them again and the consumers said Hell no!!
No government intervention needed, just a pure patriotic reaction to some liberal bitches. That is freaking America.
Liberal_puke Michael Moore is a dick wad he should be working in a mens restroom wiping my ass after eating steakies from outjack.

Speaking of Dixie Chicks - I told Tom Thumb just the other day that I was offended that they were playing DC crap on thier speaker system the last 2 times shopping there.

I let them know that I was 'ashamed' of the DC and Tom Thumb for condoning thier actions. Got a cookie cutter response, but a response non-the-less.

I told my wife to shop at wallmart instead.

Yes, I am THAT anal.
(if you want to see a copy of the Email - just ask)

Linda Ronstadt was performing before an audience. Presumably a paying audience. People were paying her to entertain them, not bear witness to her views and opinions on politics. It sticks in my craw when an entertainer decides that he/she needs to share their often unsolicited views.

I watch movies and listen to music, often to be entertained. It's my escapism. If I want news or opinions, I will watch the news channels, listen to the talking heads for opinions. Actors/entertainers should stick to what they do best, entertaining me.

Remember all the conversations we've had about things working themselves out on the censorship front without government intervention?

Being new to the site, I missed this discussion. It's only censorship if it is forced or a choice is taken away by the powers that be. It's not censorship when a person or group of persons choose not to listen, watch or buy.

Your definition is pretty good. I was making reference to another thread and something that we have gone round and round about in person.

Quick run-down: The people will make bad stuff go away in a free market Vs. The government needs to regulate.

Vauge, please add if I'm wrong about the two views.

Where are the defenders of the bill of rights? Remember something called freedom of speech in it? Entertainer or not, she is still a citizen of this great nation of ours. It is bad comment when it does not concur to opinion.

It is bad comment when it does not concur to opinion.

I think KD5BDL has the sig.... "Opinions are like butts." to finish "Everyone has one and they stink".

It's not that simple LP.

I will repeat: You have freedom of speech in this wonderful country. But, you also have the right to take the consquences of what you say.

She said something that the casino AND the customers disagreed with - she took the consquences.

Quick run-down: The people will make bad stuff go away in a free market Vs. The government needs to regulate.
LiberalFINGER - you are very much generalizing what I am advocating on the free speech thing. SOME things needs regulation (FCC public broadcasting for example).

As an employer or customer, the management of the casino has the right to make it known that an entertainer's services are no longer required for any reason at all. The question of pay then has to be dealt with. That takes contract lawyers to figure out.

Once Ronstadt was not employed, the casino could envoke the right to refuse service to anyone. Then rules against loitering.

The bill of rights is not in jeopardy when a market driven by the people make a choice as to buy or not buy, patronize or not patronize an establishment. The DC lost their market in Texas when a member of the trio made an off the cuff remark. LR got the same type of treatment by injecting unpopular commentary into her show. Again I say, let entertainers do what they do best, entertain.

BTW, Vauge, Thanks for the heads up on Tom Thumb. I don't shop there anyway as it is inconvenient, but I'll keep it in mind.
