The June 10, 2010 edition of The New York Times has a piece that describes just how grim life among ordinary North Koreans is. On account of the Kim dictatorship, basic commodities are almost luxuries, currency devaluation has wiped out savings, and factories sit idle. For a construction project, workers had to gather 17 bags of pebbles every month for the local Party committee.

From the article:

“How would the companies survive if they didn’t get money from the workers?” she asked without irony.

Well life is harsh, yet they don't live in caves and work by gathering berries and migrate like nomads. Life is harsh, but not primitive. That would be the phrase that would describe North Korean society
