many in Bani Walid are sceptical, seeing more hope in the old regime than in the country's current political forces.

"The reason this town is so attached to the former regime is that the 2011 revolution brought nothing but wars, catastrophe, division of the country and violations of its sovereignty," said engineer Fethi al-Ahmar.

"We still cling to the past because back then we had security, which is the main thing that's missing in Libya today."

Qadaffi never bombed civilians in Bengazi. Best I can tell is Hillary simply saw a CNN report repeating this and used it as an excuse
to expand UN Resolution 1973 into regime change

First, critics argue that responsibility to protect does not justify regime change. Instead, it is a narrow mandate to prevent gross human rights abuses.[7] And second, critics argue that even when the responsibility to protect doctrine is a legitimate basis for military intervention, Western nations cannot be trusted to implement limited military intervention based on responsibility to protect...Many states that supported Resolution 1973 believed that the resolution only authorized purely defensive measures – a no fly zone – to shield the civilian population from the Qaddafi regime.[13] Many nations perceived NATO’s implementation as dramatically exceeding this mandate by introducing ground forces, arming rebel groups and conducting a six month long bombing campaign targeting tanks, artillery, command and control centers, Qaddafi’s palace and perhaps Qaddafi himself.[

Gaddafi was a serial rapist and mass murderer who killed numerous Americans, and who spent his last years calling for “jihad” against Switzerland and for the country to be carved up.

No matter how brutal a tyrant was, there will still be people who like him long after he was gone.

He was a bulwark against terrorism in Libya . He constantly put Libyan Islamic Fighting Group member in jail after giving them a chance to reform. He allowed the SAS and CIA to roam in eastern Libya ( where the NTC came out of )- a bunch of misfit al-Qaeda wannabe's

whatever he was - and there were really 2 Qadaffi before and after Reagan bombed his compound.
Afterward he paid reparation for Lockerbie and gave up his WMD program

The funny thing about that is Bolton blathered about the "Libya model" to the North Koreans, and completely freaked them

He violently opposed the Arab Spring uprising and his military committed atrocities in the pursuit of the rebels.

And he got spanked for it.

Why cry for someone who funded terrorism?

He was hard lined against Libyan terrorism...

He supported others until he was spanked.

no there wasnt atrocities against the rebels. NATO bombed civilians in Misrata
Do you have any idea of the situation in Libya today? It's a permanent civil war ( because the rebels couldnt govern)
being fought by regional powers like Turkey/qatar/Russia etc.

Libya had a high standard of living under Qadaffi -we took that all away and left a broken country

Interesting how you are convinced there were no atrocities committed be Government forces...

Amnesty International disagrees.

And who is this "we"?

Libyan killing Libyan... Smacks of post invasion Iraq.

Trumpists are cheerleading Gadaffi now, huh?

Not surprising. They did try to destroy American democracy and the like.

No matter what one thinks about him, the way the rebels humiliated and murdered him was truly barbaric.

Of course, I will not describe it here.

do you always post simplistic garbage? You must be a moronic Dem (since you like insults)
and no Qaddafi didn't try to destroy US democracy. He was a dictator who treated his people well-
unlike the mess we left after the French hit his convoy -devolving Libya into a 10 year civil war

Former US President Barack Obama in 2016 admitted that Libya was the biggest mistake of his presidency. The lack of planning for the aftermath of Gaddafi’s ouster in Libya left the country spiralling into chaos and falling under the threat of violent extremists...

under Gaddafi, education and health care were free for all.
His government provided a grant up to $50,000 to newly-weds to buy their first house though it has been highlighted as a tedious process full of paperwork. Gaddafi gave the world the Great Man-Made River Project to make water available to the whole country.
Moreover, Libya was a rich nation on its own. It didn’t have any debts.....

So what do you suggest?

Another dictator?

since you are fond of making statements with no details, allow me to dispel the CRAP that Qaddafi forces used "Viagra rape"
against the NTC
One of America's most senior diplomats claimed at the United Nations security council that Muammar Gaddafi is supplying his troops with Viagra to encourage mass rape, according to diplomats.
Susan Rice, the US ambassador to the UN made the claim while accusing Gaddafi of numerous human rights abuses.

"She spoke of reports of soldiers getting Viagra and raping," a diplomat said. "She spoke of Gadhafi's soldiers targeting children, and other atrocities."
And on Friday, military and intelligence officials, speaking anonymously, said there was no evidence that that was true.

kinna late to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. But I appreciate the honest question!

If you can free your mind of "dictator" / non-dictator which is all westerners think of, you have to look at the situation on the ground.
I assume you understand the Tripoli government (GNA) is warring against the Bengazi government- Parliament in exile -
led by Hiftar who controls the army ( LNA)

Currently Turkey backs the GNA, Russia sort of backs the LNA -but is willing to play both sides and Egypt occasionally bombs the GNA...
The best thing we could do is get involved in the peace process -just like we should have done/do in Syria
instead of backing factions .Trump didnt want to -I doubt Biden even recalls the Obama adm "kinetic military action" of 2011

Why the "free my mind" nonsense.

It was a simple question.

Do you believe that Libyans are not capable of thriving without a dictatorship?

Amnesty International =/= News organizations or US government

An investigation by Amnesty International has failed to find evidence for these human rights violations and in many cases has discredited or cast doubt on them.

You call it nonsense and then harp on dictator/non-dictator..the "answer" is Mu (Buddhist)
~~
"Mu" may be used similarly to "N/A" or "not applicable," a term often used to indicate the question cannot be answered because the conditions of the question do not match the reality.
~~

there are no dictators vying for power in Libya now. there isnt even a unified government,
and the scheduled upcoming presidential elections dont seem to be making much headway

A “bulwark against terrorism”?

😂😂😂

Gaddafi armed just about every terrorist group under the sun, ranging from Palestinian movements to the PIRA.

He frantically tried to save his own skin after 9/11, when it became obvious the US was going to drop the hammer on anyone still sponsoring terrorism, but that doesn’t change the facts about his actions.

Gaddafi himself was a serial rapist. Claiming he “treated his people well” is laughably dumb.

lol. I hope you didnt actually spend money on Cojean's pulp fiction..

I suggest you read some of the links I posted about the quality of life under Qaddafi.
ranked 5th in all of Africa
He built the Great Man Made River for ex, while NATO bombed the pipes in storage claiming some farce about a weapons dump

there was a shortage of water in Tripoli, and residents drilled thru the concrete to get water from the pipes
After Qaddafi the country was run by feudal "militas" ( militia rule)
The horrors of the last ten year would fill a book - real data- and not salacious trash

The water crisis is a powerful symbol of state failure in a country that was once one of the wealthiest in the Middle East but has been gripped by turmoil since a 2011 uprising unseated Muammar Gaddafi.
For Libyans the chaos has meant power cuts and crippling cash shortages. These are often made worse by battles between armed groups vying for control of the fractured oil-rich state and its poorly-maintained infrastructure.

did I mention pre vs. post Qaddafi behavior after the Reagan bombing of his compound? he slept outside in a tent

Eight years before, in the aftermath of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, Gaddafi repudiated terrorism and ended his missile and nuclear programs in a deal with the U.S. and Europe. He was feted in European capitals.
His government served as a non‐permanent member of the UN Security Council from 2008 to 2009.
American officials congratulated him for his assistance against terrorism and discussed possible assistance in return. All seemed forgiven.

You must be a moronic Dem

Great "argument" there, annata. Keep cheerleading an evil dictator if you must, but at the very least do not complain about "poo-flinging" elsewhere if you're going to throw actual personal insults around.

Gaddafi was evil. Evil should not be defended. It's that simple.
