Liberty vs. Democracy

Many mistakenly believe democracy means liberty, but that is not true.

Well, duh.
Who believes that?
I've never heard anyone express any such sentiment.
In many ways, liberty and democracy are opposites.
Although "democracy' does mean, I suppose, freedom from totalitarian rule.
But it doesn't mean freedom from the tyranny of the majority, or from anything else.
Anyway, we don't live in a democracy, we live in a representative republic.
And "freedom" is just a meaningless catch-phrase. To experience true freedom, you'd have to live as a hermit, alone on your own private island.
There are inherent responsibilities and restrictions that come with living in a society, along with inherent protections and privileges. A society will not function properly if its members have free reign to violate the rights of their fellow citizens. Therefore, there are a whole plethora of restrictions upon our freedom, some necessary, and some unnecessary and only arbitrarily enforced, in my humble opinion.

The purest democracy is the most free of governments, but no gov't is even more free. Direct democarcy by its very nature is decetnralised.

I wouldn't trust that site though it looks like the work of a right-wing "libertarian" who doesn't seem to realise that corporations and capitalists are as bad as states and really just part of the state.

It calls Hong Kong the freest economy on earth for god's sake, as he ever been there and seen the squalor of the average person?

Libertarianism is often thought of in economic terms however, it also applies in social terms.

And you are entirely incorrect which is why it was brought up. There are more details to the article than the economics of Hong Kong.

Democracy is not the term to use when refering to a government focused on optimizing liberty. At any time a majority may grow to represents a collectivist, repressive idiotology.
