I lean a bit right while my wife leans a bit left and this became evident in a real life situation that sums up the difference. We were staying at a campground recently sitting around having drinks in the evening and watching kids play in a grassy area across from us. Two little kids came riding down the road on bicycles, the littlest one could barely ride his tiny bike. The older brother veered off into the rough grassy area and little brother tried to follow but immediately crashed. Big brother lept off his bike to help and picked the little one up saying" quit crying, you're not going to die." My lib wife wanted to go help but I stopped her, the kid was fine. Then the kids discovered the crash had twisted the handlebars and the bike could not be ridden so they were in a quandary as to what to do, the little kid was to small to carry his broken bike. My lib wife says "lets go help", I said they are figuring it out. Soon they devised a plan, they left the broken bike and big brother pushed his bike while escorting still sobbing little brother back to their campsite. Within minutes big brother came running back for the wrecked bike and carried it home. I turned to my lib wife and said "see, they figured this out on their own. They learned they were capable of handling the situation without anybody's help. This was a growing experience for them and if we had helped the only lesson they would have learned was when you get in trouble just sit there and wait for someone to help you". She had to admit I was right. THE END :)

You don't seriously think this can be used to support a political philosophy do you? You have two able bodied children who were probably raised by capable parents and had a minor set back in a very safe environment, and I would guess that if there was any blood or real fear present for either of these kids you would have been the first one there. This is not a reflection of real world conditions.

If you really wanted to teach them a lesson you'd have stolen the broken bike while they were gone.

I know another real life story that illustrates the difference:

Two friends, one a liberal, one a conservative, both got a chain email about politics. The conservative says to his friend "look, this explains everything about why you liberals are all wrong". The liberal replies "chain emails may sound reasonable but they rarely stand up to independent critical thought". The conservative waved away that objection, saying "Glenn Beck told me I did not need independent critical thinking as long as I buy gold".

The two of you need to learn to stand up straight before you bang your heads together.

I am actually quite surprised Obama didn't arrive on scene for a photo op, to commiserate and cry with the little one, to promise federal aid in replacing the bike with Holder standing to the side, deciding whether or not to launch an investigation of campgrounds and why they allow such rough grassy areas... and what about the ADA, where were the ramps for wheelchairs here??? Somebody has got to go down. I can hear that squeaky girly voice of Harry Reid chiming in indicating that there will be federal aid in the form of more lawn mowers to cut this offensive grass and to build accessible grassy areas for all.

Question is, where might be Nancy Pelosi? My understanding would incorporate the idea that she would probably be out getting her face stretched once again...oh the cost of maintaining that gorgeous face, huh?

Excellent commentary!

I'm actually not surprised that someone on the right would jump up and make this about Obama, Reid and Pelosi. The only thing you didn't do was blame the media.

"Kid fell off his bike. Damn libruls...."

I think the primary lesson in this commentary is that you're a lucky man - you've linked yourself to that rare bird, a wife who can admit she's wrong, or at least admit you were right. Well done!

You are right, the media should be included, thanks. And good call on those liberals too, btw.

I am a liberal and always made my kids struggle to figure it out on their own until I saw that they were truly at a loss. Give a man fish....

So in my story would you have wanted to help as my wife did? Just curious.:)

I would have waited to see if they could take care of it on their own, if not I would have walked over to them and talked with them to see if I could help them figure it out for themselves and if that didn't work it becomes a safety issue and I would just help, get them back to their parents and let their parents know what happened and how I handled it.

Sure easy to say that now but if you were there hearing that little kid crying you would have rushed over immediately, ADMIT IT!

Helping someone with anything other than understanding how to help themselves (unless you have learned first hand that they are truly incapable) is self serving. I don't want to help someone so I can feel good about myself, I already feel good about myself.

I have no problem helping little kids. Heck a while back two of the woman I had working for me had their 5 year old boys in the office and they were bored so one of the girls bought them a Hotwheels set. The kids were in back playing around but in 5 minutes were bored again so I went back to help. I showed them that if they started the track higher they could get better speed then I showed them how to add a hill in the middle of the track then I got them working on jumps. Later on I cut the middle out of a paper plate and showed them how to get the cars to jump through the hoop.

I had to stop when one of the women overheard me explaining that if we lit the plate on fire it would be even better....

You were PLAYING with them not helping them.

No offense but I don't believe you. I would have to physically restrain you from rushing over to help.

You see, this is the problem with people who think like you. You cling to your preconceptions about people because it makes you feel safe. Sorry brother, you are wrong. Or you could just be razzin' me.

There is a third option, I know you better than you know yourself although razzin is a distinct possibility.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt then and go with razzin

I do. Some of us make policy for people who can help themselves based on those who can't. Do you think otherwise?

That's because you're not really a liberal. At least, not in today's sense of the word.
