Letterman receives restraining order

SANTA FE, N.M. - Lawyers for David Letterman want a judge to quash a restraining order granted to a Santa Fe woman who contends the CBS late-night host used code words to show he wanted to marry her and train her as his co-host.

A state judge granted a temporary restraining order to Colleen Nestler, who alleged in a request filed last Thursday that Letterman has forced her to go bankrupt and caused her "mental cruelty" and "sleep deprivation" since May 1994.

Nestler's application for a restraining order was accompanied by a six-page typed letter in which she said Letterman used code words, gestures and "eye expressions" to convey his desires for her.

She wrote that she began sending Letterman "thoughts of love" after his "Late Show" began in 1993, and that he responded in code words and gestures, asking her to come East.

She said he asked her to be his wife during a televised "teaser" for his show by saying, "Marry me, Oprah." Her letter said Oprah was the first of many code names for her and that the coded vocabulary increased and changed with time.

Her letter does not say why she recently sought a restraining order.

Is it really that easy to get a restraining order against someone? It sounds like this woman is very crazy and her claims don't make any sense at all. I thought it was a amusing story though. :mrgreen:

I think this woman is a complete nut job.....The Oprah comment is what sold me. It's well known that Oprah and Letterman aren't exactly the best of friends, and I'm pretty sure he more than likely made that comment in jest.

*sigh* some people these days....

Restraining orders are fairly easy to obtain, but generally a letter ISN'T enough proof. Many judges require police reports and/or pictures of past abuse incidents, if available, in order to establish a pattern.

What it sounds to me like is this is a case of restraining order first, investigate second, because the claims ARE that outlandish. It's not common for this to happen, but it does, because then the proper authorities can conduct a thorough investigation. Remember, a restraining order in no way convicts anyone... but when her claims are found to be unfounded (I don't know a judge in his/her right mind that wouldn't recommend a psychiatrist for this woman) the restraining order will be rescinded, and all traces of it will disappear from Mr. Letterman's record.
