The Supreme Court just handed down very bad news for Black voters

Ardoin v. Robinson could foreshadow a new age of widespread racial gerrymandering.

The Supreme Court handed down a brief order Tuesday evening that effectively reinstates racially gerrymandered congressional maps in the state of Louisiana, at least for the 2022 election.

Under these maps, Black voters will control just one of Louisiana’s six congressional seats, despite the fact that African Americans make up nearly a third of the state’s population. Thus, the Court’s decision in Ardoin v. Robinson means that Black people will have half as much congressional representation as they would enjoy under maps where Black voters have as much opportunity to elect their own preferred candidate as white people in Louisiana.

A federal trial court, applying longstanding Supreme Court precedents holding that the Voting Rights Act does not permit such racial gerrymanders, issued a preliminary injunction temporarily striking down the Louisiana maps and ordering the state legislature to draw new ones that include two Black-majority districts. Notably, a very conservative panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit denied the state’s request to stay the trial court’s decision — a sign that Louisiana’s maps were such a clear violation of the Voting Rights Act that even one of the most conservative appeals courts in the country could not find a good reason to disturb the trial court’s decision.

As the Fifth Circuit explained, current law typically forbids maps that dilute a particular racial group’s voting power, at least when that group is “sufficiently large and compact to form a majority” in additional congressional districts, when it “votes cohesively” and when “whites tend to vote as a bloc” to defeat the minority group’s preferred candidates.

Nevertheless, the Supreme Court voted 6-3 along party lines to stay the trial court’s injunction, effectively reinstating the gerrymandered maps. The Court’s order is only one page, and it provides no substantive explanation of why the Court’s Republican appointees voted to effectively strip Black Louisianans of half of their representation in the US House of Representatives.

Which party will rule after the Mid-Terms? Unless inflation disappears, cost of rents drops, home affordability increases, gas prices drop, crime in general and mass shootings in particular drop, well...Republicans. Obviously.

The Party in power almost always gets buffeted even when times are relatively grand. That is to say nothing of when times are lousy.
I don't find it quite as obvious. Sure, you name a few issues at the very heart of the matter, and those are on people's mind. You might as well include people having to drop their pets at the shelter because they can't afford to care for them any longer.
What, iyo, will happen when all those unwanted and unaffordable babies arrive?

Fox Will Not Air the Jan 6 Insurrection Hearings...

According to Deadline, the top Fox network will not be airing the hearings on Jan. 6 by the House Select Committee on Thursday. They'll be the only network to do so.

According to the network, they'll be airing the opinions of Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham instead. All three hosts have attacked the proceedings and downplayed the seriousness of the attempt to overthrow the election and stampede the Capitol. On Fox Business, however, Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum will host coverage of the hearings beginning at 8 p.m. EST.

Already Fox hosts have been called out for trying to gin up fear over anything but the Jan. 6 hearings. They've already begun sounding the alarm about an incoming caravan of immigrants that will invade the United States. It's the same thing that the network tried to push in 2018 ahead of the midterm election. Once the election was over, the crisis mysteriously disappeared...W

What does "rule" mean? At this time next year, the Dems will have the White House and most likely the Senate. The RINO party will likely have the house, so who rules?

Inflation at 40 year record high.

People now really feeling the pinch of the loss of buying power.

Jan 6th will be a fart in the wind compared to the message the American people will be sending you, Joe Biden and his moronic second in command.

Polls are only getting worse for you.
Good turnout in Kansas eh 😅

I found this great post by h/t @post, thank you...

At least you seem to acknowledge that the purpose of the congressional demorat‘s prime time show (part one of a new series?) is 100% political.

I doubt that the ‘just the facts’ show will start by informing the public that Pelosi formed the ‘bipartisan’ 1/6 committee by appointing 7 demorats and 2 (never Trump) republicants and said that any questions about Pelosi’s role in making US Capitol security preparations were off limits.
Why didn't the republicans agree to get a independent committee like Pelosi offered?

Same ole bullshit deflection. Why do it? Who would the audience be that would swallow it, aside from those irresistibly attracted to Trump? McCarthy and his two asshole J6 Committee picks blew themselves up!

On July 30, 2022, I posted what follows:
it is correct and proper congress investigates.
it was incorrect and improper that pelosi sought to control who the gop appointed to the committee.
the precedent has been set and will be used in some future congress to the detriment of the dems.
please don't 'whine' then

The date stamp on this tweet is July 19, 2021. Anyone other than an RWE can understand that Rep. Banks blew up his eligibility to serve on the investigatory committee!

"..Our rating: False

Based on our research, we rate FALSE the claim that Pelosi rejected Trump's request for 10,000 National Guard troops to be deployed before Jan. 6. Pelosi's office said the speaker was not contacted about deploying the National Guard prior to the rally, and the Pentagon has previously stated that there is no record of the request. A timeline from the Department of Defense about the events leading up to Jan. 6 does not include any mention of a request for 10,000 National Guard members. The former House sergeant-at-arms said he did not have any discussions with congressional leaders about the National Guard until the day of the riot. "

July 23, 2021

"CLAIM: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi blocked the National Guard from coming to the Capitol during the Jan. 6 insurrection.
AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. As Speaker of the House, Pelosi does not direct the National Guard. Further, as the Capitol came under attack, she and the Senate Majority leader called for military assistance, including the National Guard.
THE FACTS: On Tuesday, a false claim about the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol resurfaced suggesting that Pelosi blocked the National Guard from coming to lawmakers’ defense during the insurrection at the Capitol.
“@SpeakerPelosi, why did you block the National Guard from protecting the Capitol?” Indiana Rep. Jim Banks tweeted.
Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy posed a similar question on Fox News saying, “Was there a decision by the Speaker not to have the National Guard at the Capitol that day?”
The answer is no.
“On January 6th, the Speaker, a target of an assassination attempt that day, was no more in charge of Capitol security than Mitch McConnell was. This is a clear attempt to whitewash what happened on January 6th and divert blame,” Drew Hammill, a spokesperson for Pelosi told The Associated Press in an
email.

The decision on whether to call National Guard troops to the Capitol is made by what is known as the Capitol Police Board, which is made up of the House Sergeant at Arms, the Senate Sergeant at Arms and the Architect of the Capitol. The board decided not to call the guard ahead of the insurrection but did eventually request assistance after the rioting had already begun, and the troops arrived several hours later.

The House Sergeant at Arms reports to Pelosi and the Senate Sergeant at Arms reported to McConnell, a Republican who was then Senate Majority Leader. There is no evidence that either directed the security officials not to call the guard beforehand, and Hammill said after the insurrection that Pelosi was never informed of such a request.

The officials on the board, along with the former Capitol Police chief, Steven Sund, have disputed each others’ accounts of who requested the guard when. Both Sergeants of Arms and the police chief resigned immediately after the attack.

Once Trump’s supporters were assaulting police and breaking into the building, Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer appealed to military leaders, asking the Army to deploy the National Guard.

“The Speaker believes security officials should make security decisions. The Speaker immediately signaled her support for the deployment of the National Guard when she was presented with that recommendation on the afternoon of January 6th. Public testimony confirms the fact that the Speaker was not made aware of any request for such a deployment prior to then,” Hammill said in a statement this week.

Republicans have falsely laid the blame on Pelosi without mentioning that GOP Leader McConnell had similar authority over the security officials that day. But there is no evidence that either was involved in any effort to block the National Guard before or during the insurrection."
