On June 6, 1944 — 72 years ago today — Allied troops launched a bold and costly assault on the beaches of Normandy that changed the course of the war.

Today we remember their sacrifices.

The bravery shown by those men that stepped off of those landing craft under withering fire from hardened enemy emplacements is almost impossible to imagine.

Thank God the world had a generation of young men that would literally step up and answer that call.

Can you just imagine, as the troops were loading off the watercraft being cut down, blown up and apart, what the men in the boats behind them, watching and waiting their turn, must have thought?? I get chills just thinking about it.

What horror.

The first scene in Saving Private Ryan depicts the landing. It is forever etched in my mind's eye. It is beyond the human mind to comprehend. How did these young men do it???

May God have mercy on their souls.
