It seems like USA have the same problem as Sweden with less local news and more puppy news. That the drastic reduction in revenue for news corporations have led to drastic cut backs in reporting of local news. While at the same time increased focus on cheap and clickable puppy news stories and less focus on costly but important investigative journalism.

After two straight weeks of focusing primarily on political conventions, late-night comedian John Oliver turned to different topics on Sunday night. HBO's John Oliver Skewers 'Digital First' Newspaper Journalism - Fortune

Oliver spent almost 20 minutes detailing all of the challenges journalists—particularly local reporters—face as they try to report on what’s important in the digital age. He noted that a lot of his own work is actually based on investigations conducted by local reporters, who face more and more pressure to cater to what audiences want to read. Often, the important news comes from following yarns that, on the surface, sound boring—like local government meetings. Unfortunately, many outlets are downsizing or nixing their state house units altogether—which Oliver says could lead to big problems down the line.
