According to Yemen government officials, Shi'ite Muslim rebels that have been fighting government forces for the past year are being supported by Iran.

Shi'ite leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi and his rebel force are attempting to install religious rule over the Sunni-dominated country.

Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh stated in January that the rebels are being supported by foreign countries. He did not specify which countries.

Iran officials have said that the Yemen rebels are being supported by Iranian religious institutions but not by Tehran.

"There are Iranian religious institutions which are providing support,"The head of media for Saleh's General People's Congress said on the party's Web site on Thursday.

One year ago, Yemen freed more than 600 Shi'ite prisoners in order to end the 2 years of battling.

But, "the Houthis have used a period of truce with the state to buy heavy weapons using foreign support money," Shami said.

Yemen officials are now saying that Lebanon is involved in creating sectarian violence like that in Iraq.

Libyan talk of mediation between the Houthis and the state represent evidence of Libyan backing to the rebels".

At least 105 soldiers and 90 rebels have died this year in clashes between Sunnis and Shi'ites according to Yemen officials.
