Leader of Mexico's brutal Zetas drug cartel captured - World News

MEXICO CITY — Miguel Angel Trevino Morales, the notoriously brutal leader of the feared Zetas drug cartel, was captured before dawn Monday, officials said.
Trevino Morales, 40, was captured by Mexican Marines who intercepted a pickup truck with $2 million in cash on a dirt road in the countryside outside the border city of Nuevo Laredo, which has long served as the Zetas' base of operations. The truck was halted by a Marine helicopter and Trevino Morales was taken into custody along with a bodyguard and an accountant and eight guns, government spokesman Eduardo Sanchez told reporters.
The Zetas leader and his alleged accomplices were flown to Mexico City, where they are expected to eventually be tried in a closed system that usually takes years to prosecute cases, particularly high-profile ones.
I really hope this is a great victory and just not a rival cartel working with the govenment taking out the other guy. Los Zetas are truly a force to be reckoned with, they are ruthless. I have heard of Los Zetas being infiltrated into the US and that is the last thing we need. Maybe the government can move on to get Sinaloa next, I can only pray.

Yeah. Congrats to the mexican marines and all branches of mexican law enforcement. They are literally fighting a war with the drug cartels to take back the country. One drug lord down, hopefully they will put behind bars his entire cartel, or at least the leaders of that cartel so that another won't just take this guys' place. And then hold the area from having other cartels take it over.

These people don't just deal with marijuana blax. They deal with heroine. cocaine. hashish... they have operations in prostitution and what naught.

If you make all drugs legal, then these people will become wealthy legally. Because they have the opium plantations. The cannabis plantations and all the facilities needed to make tons of money from all kinds of drugs. So the only thing you take away is that they have to spend money on their own private armies to keep their currently illegal operations afloat.

So no. If you make them legal, you just make very bad people very rich in a legal manner and release a lot of very harmful drugs to the population.

While marijuana is ok, the rest really aren't.

Kidnapping has also become a big business for these guys. They will kidnap you for $50 or just kidnap you and then murder you for no apparent reason.

Not true, if heroine was legal competition on the free market would make the profit margins in line with most other legal drugs. BECAUSE heroine is illegal and the demand is high and supply is low the current profit margin in heroine is 17,000%. Name one legal substance with that high of profit margin.

Dude.

So lets give the benefit that this map is true. You have 10 cartels occupying Mexico, with the white area being disputed areas because the mexican govt has managed to keep that area clean. I will say this, I agree, legalize pot, but not all the other drugs. So lets discuss on the premise that heroin, cocaine, hash and all the other drugs that aren't pot are illegal.

These drug cartels make money just from the areas they own. If you make drugs legal, they will be able to legally spread their filth all over Mexico, even in the regions where it's now white. While they do have, more or less, a monopoly in their region, they have a limited region and it's always under threat from a hostile takeover or from being disrupted by the authorities.

So while yes, maybe legal competition will drive the price of heroin, hash and cocaine down. And that's a maybe. Is that what you want? People having easy access to hard drugs? I think that is a terrible mistake. And the only way to ensure you drive the price up is for the govt to raise the VAT on those drugs... and if they become as expensive as they currently are, which aren't all that expensive, why shouldn't the drug cartels just say: screw it, and go illegal again and keep 100% of the profit and not pay taxes on their earnings, basically, they become cartels again.

So in order for them not to turn to illegality, the govt has to keep very little regulation and very little taxation on the hard drugs, which again, maybe it will lead to a lower cost... and more people will have easier access to hard drugs. Not smart.

There is no situation in which legalizing hard drugs is a good or smart course of action. It's a horrible, horrible idea. Lets hope the mexican govt and the law enforcement agencies will continue to win against the cartels and destroy them, reducing the presence of hard drugs in mexico to the minimal amount possible.

It is not the government's job to be everyone's mommy. If they want to take hard drugs that is their business and no one else.

Dude. I know you're a libertarian but that's stupid.

We as a society have looked at the facts and determined that hard drugs are bad for you. So we as a society have determined that they shouldn't exist in society because we like to stay away from things that are bad for us. The govt needs to enforce this. Until we all grow liking the idea that hard drugs are good for us, let them stay banned. And while a lot of people are joining the side of pro-marijuana, even good, sensible people, I doubt many of them will go on a legalize heroin camp.

No. hard drugs are bad drugs and they should be illegal so that their existence in society is diminished and brought as close as possible to innexistence.

Because it worked so well when we took out Pablo Escobar.

If cigarettes and alcohol were illegal, we would have violent tobacco/alcohol cartels.

It doesn't matter how dangerous a drug is, when you make that drug illegal you make it more dangerous, not less.

Legalization would take a multi-billion dollar industry away from cartels and drug gangs. They would still be thugs, of course, just not filthy rich thugs.

We learned with alcohol prohibition what a stupid idea it is. To assume the same problems won't or don't exist with other drugs, as if they're any different, is just mouth foaming knuckle dragging STUPID.

Everyone wants to minimize the use of drugs, especially hard drugs. But legal sanctions and jail time are a STUPID way to try and accomplish that goal. It clearly causes more problems than it solves.

Because it makes more sense to support the drug cartels that kill thousands and run Mexico with an Iron Fist and it is also better to have more people in American prisons then China and Russia combined. As with most liberal programs the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

How are you supporting the drug cartels by making it illegal to sell hard drugs? omg man, you're not making sense.
what does this have to do with the american prison system? This is mexico, or El Mehico, not the USA.

You really are clueless aren't you, not trying to insult you just pointing out the facts.

Lets put it this way lets say we make gas illegal and the profits for selling gas goes up to that of heroine 17,000%.

How would that be helping the people that sell gas? Hmmmmm......

If drugs were legal there would be no cartels. Got it?

The American prison system is filled with people BECAUSE drugs are illegal that would not be there otherwise. Come on man try to see beyond your twisted benevolence.

Pot is the #1 money maker for cartels because of it's volume. Making it legal in the US would severely affect their bottom line. There will always be gangs that capitalize on providing illegal goods and services that people want but why do we have to help them with stupid laws that give them a monopoly? It is the same thing that happened with prohibition. You would think we could learn from that.

Dude, I am not contesting the fact that if you make drugs legal, there would be no cartels.

But you didn't read my previous comment, the one in which I put that map.

These drug cartels have the plantations of opium and cannabis to make the hard drugs they sell. So they also have the facilities in which they prepare said drugs. If you make hard drugs legal, all you do is turn these criminals into law-biding drug magnates who will have HUGE profit margins from the sell of hard drugs legally. They already own the means of production, commercializing them legally will be a breeze.

And while you do encourage LEGAL competition between the various druglords turned drug magnates, you encourage it at a NATIONAL level, not just the regional level that they have now. So areas that are now NOT in any of the current drug lords' influence will become a deployment zone for legal hard drug merchandise.

These drug tycoons will not make their fortune by selling drugs at a high mark-up, but sell them accross a WIDE market. With marketing and all that... it's easy to make more fortune. Remember, the wealthiest people in the world are not people who operate illegally, but those who operate legally. Legally, you always make a lot more money. And if you legalize a very dangerous substance with real harmful effects you endanger an entire country while letting people get away with murder legally. It's insane.

We aren't discussing about pot and the USA. By all means, make pot legal in the USA. That's fine. We are discussing hard drugs and the cartels that distribute them, and have a whole criminal infrastructure in MEXICO.

A criminal infrastructure that was built on selling Marijuana to Americans, that is how it all started. The same thing happened in Columbia in the 80's. They started with pot and moved into cocaine.

Dude. That may be true but still, this will just mean that the drug cartels will setup a legal company to sell marijuana legally to a wide market easily in the USA. They have the means of production, they just need the setup for the means of distribution which are a lot harder illegally. They'll still make money. Who is to say that they won't make money legally from this in the USA? Yeah, there will be US companies who will sell marijuana but still. Cash, lots of cash.

Legalizing marijuana in the US won't stop the drug cartels from gaining money from the USA market. And maybe the smart ones will earn even more.

But this won't help Mexico at all. The only thing that will help mexico is maybe legalizing marijuana and have state-funded companies secure the majority of the marketshare in the marijuana market, but they will still need to keep hard drugs illegal because hard drugs are BAD. Legalizing them is dangerous and irresponsible. And the only way to deal with that is by using special forces to hunt down and destroy these cartels.

That's nonsense. Legalizing pot will kill their market. Pot grows anywhere and matures in 16 weeks. Cutting off their money supply will do more than an ARMY to reduce their influence.

How do you know? maybe I'm a smart drug dealer, follow american news... when there is talk of legalizing pot in states I make preparations to set up a company... buy store locations and all that, and then when the law passes, bam, I already have the supply, the means of production and offer reasonable small prices for marijuana to customers all over that state. Earlier than anyone else can. I buy off the competition and become a multi millionaire legally.

it's perfectly possible. You just say it will kill their market because you want to believe that. There is no reason why what I just said can't be true. If anything I will reach more people than I did before because now that it's legal, I can freely advertise it and set up stores everywhere without watching for the fuzz. In fact, the fuzz is on my side.
