Republican lawmakers are expressing shock over a Labor Department ad campaign that offers government assistance to illegal immigrants who think they're getting shortchanged for their work -- and at least one of them is planning to write to Labor Secretary Hilda Solis for an explanation.

Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz says he wants to know why taxpayers are being asked to spend money to ensure that illegals get assistance for fair wages while millions of unemployed Americans struggle to find jobs

Well duh, American Workers don't matter.

Without wishing to or actually taking sides.
I believe that what was proposed was that all those employed should be paid at the rate of minimum wage.

Except THEY ARE ILLEGALS AND SHOULDN'T HAVE ****ING JOBS. I got no problem siding with the law, and with my Fellow Americans, sorry you find that so terrible a thought.

Where did you get the idea that he finds that "so terrible a thought?"

Was it the part where he pretty clearly expressed that he didn't have such thoughts? I mean, if you're going to be inventing conversations in your head, you should post some fake quotes or something so the rest of us can be clued in on the conversation.

Implication that illegals working is no big deal.

Implication that saying otherwise would be a bad thing.

This gives him a chance to clarify. Have anything on the OP or you just here to try and derail the thread because it makes the Left look so bad?

Actually if you got over your partisan bickering then you would realize that the reason illegals are so popular among employers is that they can force them to work for less than minimum wage because of the threat of being deported. By offering this assistance then the idea is to push up even illegal immigrants wages to minimum wage and hence the chance hiring American's gets much larger. So in reality they are doing this FOR the American workers because the illegals are forcing them out of the market because they are "willing" to be hired for much less in wages.

And before you use your normal "they should not be there".. then no **** sherlock but as long as businesses hire the illegals then they will come to the US and as long as they do, then why not force the businesses in question into the limelight by demanding that illegals are paid the same as American's? And yes the best way would be to hunt down the businesses in question but it aint like that is gonna happen is it now.. your republican friends would stop that in a heartbeat as they have done for generations.

I disagree. They want to hire them because they tend to be better workers in my experience.

Why do you call yourself a centrist? I mean come on!

Better workers that will work for next to nothing and keep silent about it due to the fear of being deported.

Yes and? Why not attack the problem at all levels with all means? Why only go the party line about "kick them Hispanic´s out" theme? Why NOT target the companies that hire them? And if you dont have the balls to dissolve all companies that hire illegals, or fine the crap out of them, then force them to pay the same wage as Americans, hence remove one of the biggest incentives there is in hiring illegals. Like it or not your politicians cant get their act together (both sides) because they have their hands down the pockets of the very companies that hire illegals, so I am amazed that this even happened.

I dont think deportation is such a fear amongst them, I mean it will keep them from talking to authorities but I don't think their employers hold them hostage. They dont go around going: "Hey thur, I knoe ur an illeguhl! Youd better take my wages!" And their wage is more likely market determined.

Ignoring the silly partisan comments in this thread so far, IMO the video sends the wrong message in that it almost gives a wink and a nod to illegals in this country. I think this just further cements the notion that our government is not going to do anything to enforce the immigration laws of this country.

Those illegals shouldn't be paid at all, and ought to be run out of here. Just give them a bus ticket to Juarez.

If the companies are breaking the law, prosecute them. But run the illegals out of here.

You don't seem much like a centrist since you always take the liberal side of everything.

Here's a crazy thought...

If the Labor Department knows of illegal immigrants, REPORT THEM, and have them deported.

Jesus F'ing Christ. No wonder so many make the argument of "we can't deport millions of people" without anything to back it up. Their evidence must be that the freaking government is too stupid or unethical to do it and that's why it can't happen, not because it PHYSICALLY can't.

Seriously, to help them with this you'd have to know who and where they are. If you know that then get rid of them.

Yes I agree, but America does not do that does it now? No the companies hide behind their congressman by padding their congressmen's wallets with donations. There is NO downside for US companies what so ever to hiring illegals. If they got fined considerably or broken up, then maybe it would not be such a good deal to hire illegals ..Just think if all the farms were threatened to be seized by the local government for hiring illegals to take in their corps? Do you think they would hire illegals then? In Europe the penalty for hiring someone off the books so to say, often illegals is huge, especially for repeat offenders.. they simply loose the right to do business.

But run the illegals out of here.

Poor choice of words for an American if you ask me.. but yes I agree. Illegals are illegals, but focusing all your anger on them only makes you look like a racist xenophobe. It is not the illegals fault that there is work for them in the US.. that is the US fault, namely the companies that are willing to hire them. It is not the illegals fault that your economy is a supposed "free market" with no checks and balances, and yet you choose to focus ALL your anger on them.. so one has to wonder why you focus all your anger on them.

You don't seem much like a centrist since you always take the liberal side of everything.

Is it suddenly liberal (as in socialist) to go after both sides that are breaking the law... wow I would call that a true liberal borderline conservative policy, but I guess not in the twisted world of American conservative populist politics.

Like it or not, the amount of illegals in the US would be considerably less if there was no jobs for them.

The majority of Illegal Immigrants, at least here in Texas allready earn more than minimum wage. Don't you find it ironic that the secretary of labor is supporting illegal activity and that she is the daughter of illegal immigrant parents from Nicaragua and Mexico. Hilda's parents where granted amnesty during the Regan Administration. They were also law breakers why shouldn't she support those who disregard our laws now. She should be fired immediatly.

I disagree. I've worked with them in construction and they do the shoddiest work I have ever seen.. They use hammers for screwdrivers. They don't give a **** about doing a competent job.

Greedy businessmen love them because a lot of them are afraid to complain and they work cheap. You get what you pay for.

Doesn't imply that at all. This is what I meant by the conversations in your head part.

If the Labor Department knows who's employing illegal immigrants, REPORT THEM, and have them suffer the consequences.

Rep. Ted Poe said:
"After all, it is illegal to hire workers that are in our country illegally."

/facepalm. The reason business hire illegals over citizens is because they dont have to pay them minimum wage.

The wage may be in part, but there's also the various taxes and benefits that don't have to be paid, and you get to ignore things like safe working conditions because illegals aren't going to go file an OSHA complaint. A $10/hr illegal might actually be cheaper than a minimum wage legal worker.

Still no substance to teh thread, just trolling me. It's okay Duece, we know how hard it must be for you to find a way to defend the Labor Deptarment saying they'll help illegals break the law.

Again thats the point, the illegal is hired because they dont have to pay for any of that.
