Kurdistan deserves an amicable divorce from Baghdad

What say you? Do you think the Kurds in northern Iraq should move forward with complete independence from Iraq?
I may disagree with the KDP (the ruling party in Northern Iraq (part of Kurdistan)) mainly because of their hostile actions with the PYD, YPG, PKK, but I do believe that Kurdistan in Northern Iraq should vote for complete independence from Iraq. The Kurds have shown that they are good partner when it comes to military affairs and protection of different sects of the population, but they have also been getting screwed economically by Baghdad. I hope the referendum moves forward.

No. Iraqi Kurdistan's economy relies largely on oil, and since an independent Kurdistan would be completely landlocked, it would become heavily reliant on, if not a client of, Iran or Turkey in order to survive. The KRG, and the KDP in particular, don't have a great track record when it comes to minorities, utterly abandoning the Yazidis in Sinjar during ISIS' 2014 summer offensive. As brutal as the PKK has been in the past, ISIS' slaughter and enslavement of the Yazidis would have been far worse had they and the YPG not cooperated in evacuating the town after the Peshmerga simply left. The KDP is also repressive, having copied Assad's approach to dissent by opening fire on protestors. Barzani is a pimp and a warlord and the Kurdish people deserve much better than him as the leader of an autonomous region, let alone an independent state.

This is all, of course, leaving out the fact that Iraq is still in a war of existence against ISIS. This is not a good time to challenge the integrity of the Iraqi state, especially when Kurdish cooperation is essential for the upcoming liberation of Mosul. In short, this is neither the time nor the place for a new nation.

My first thought was too fact check this, because some of this blatantly false, but its definitely accurate enough for the nightly news, toss in some conspiracies theories and some racial stereotypes and now repeat it 1000 times on fox news, follow it up with pictures like this and you would have the next boogeyman, muslim commies lol

All it would take would be few photos of al-baghdadi petting a cute kitten or something, and ISIS will become "americas most important ally in the region"

Acc. to The United States Secretary of Defence Ashton Carter there is a link between PYD-YPG and PKK. Ashton Carter admits PYD and PKK link in testimony.

A few hours later Spokesman John Kirby said, despite Defense Secretary Ashton Carter’s recent statements about the group,

“… Nothing’s changed about our take here. The PKK [Kurdistan Workers’ Party] is a foreign terrorist organization. That hasn’t changed,” Kirby said. “… YPG’s not a designated foreign terrorist organization. PKK is. Nothing’s changed about that.”

USA is violating The United Nations’ landmark Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), which was signed by USA, by supporting PYD, Syrian branch of PKK. This means USA goes against Article 18 of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties (VCLT).

International courts will in future be waiting for USA.

I doubt it, isn't ypg like half foreign fighters at this point from europe and the usa? you think any country is going to publicly call out some candian or australian volunteer fighter because they're connected to a kurdish left wing militant group in Turkey? who would dare do that? merkel?

Of course the PKK are terrorists. They use the same terrorist tactics against civilians in Turkey as Hamas uses against civilians in Israel, AQAP uses against civilians in Yemen, and other examples of the same elsewhere.

why doesn't anyone call them self a terrorist?

The central government should lock the seditious insurrectionists up, and not allow the referendum to move forward.

It's only sedition if Baghdad is in a state where they can enforce those laws. If Kurdistan seceded and defended their borders from Baghdad they are now functionally a new state not subject to sedition laws.

So why single out Iraq?? Turkey has the biggest piece of the pie and looking at this map, I'd say that Iran has nearly the same size slice as Iraq, so why single Iraq?? What makes it so special??

It already functionally exists as a separate political entity

The validity of the law is not dependent on whether or not you can get away with breaking it.
