STATEMENT BY GOV. BILL WELD REGARDING THE FINAL WEEKS OF THIS ELECTION

October 25, 2016:

… …

I would like to address myself to all those in the electorate who remain torn between two so-called major party candidates whom they cannot enthusiastically support. I’m speaking particularly to those Republicans who feel that our President should exhibit commonly accepted standards of decency and discipline.

I would not have stepped out of the swirl of the campaign to make this statement if I did not fear for our country, as I do.

“A President of the United States operates every day under a great deal of pressure — from all sides, and in furtherance of many different agendas. With that pressure comes constant criticism.

“After careful observation and reflection, I have come to believe that Donald Trump, if elected President of the United States, would not be able to stand up to this pressure and this criticism without becoming unhinged and unable to perform competently the duties of his office.
… …

“Throughout this campaign, Mr. Trump has demonstrated an inability to handle criticism or blame well. His first instinct is to lash out at others. When challenged, he often responds as a child might. He makes a sour face, he calls people by insulting names, he waves his arms, he impatiently interrupts. Most families would not allow their children to remain at the dinner table if they behaved as Mr. Trump does. He has not exhibited the self-control, the discipline, or the emotional depth necessary to function credibly as a President of the United States.

“From the beginning of his campaign, Mr. Trump has conjured up enemies. First it was eleven million criminals in our midst, all bent on obtaining the benefits of citizenship, at our expense. Over time, the enemies became any trading partner of the United States. He says they are nothing but foreigners seeking to threaten our livelihoods. Now we have reached the point where his idea of America’s enemies includes almost anyone who talks or looks different from him. The goal of the Trump campaign, from the outset, has been to stir up envy, resentment, and group hatred.

“This is the worst of American politics. I fear for our cohesion as a nation, and for our place in the world, if this man who is unwilling to say he will abide by the result of our national election becomes our President.

… …

In the final days of this very close race, every citizen must be aware of the power and responsibility of each individual vote. This is not the time to cast a jocular or feel-good vote for a man whom you may have briefly found entertaining. DONALD TRUMP SHOULD NOT, CANNOT, AND MUST NOT BE ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.”

Nothing he did was respectable. All he did was conform that he never had any business being the Libertarian VP.

I understand why he did it.

The REAL Libertarian thing to do, of course, would be to vote for the guy who says

They want to cut your social security, I'm not cutting your social security,” Trump said in Racine, Wisconsin, on April 2.

The neoconfederates are trying so hard to monopolize Libertarianism that it's almost cute.

I don't support Trump, you know.

Nah. You just shill for him.

Agreed. He just showed himself to be a phony.

I would rather push for someone that the government won't work with than someone that will have support in the other branches of government. I can hope for forced restraint with Trump, while all I get with Hillary is a woman that her party wanted to win. When you're given two statist scum it is best to go with the one that the other statist scum hate.

I'm pretty sure you're basically just an alt-rightist who has appropriated libertarianism because it provides for a (marginally) more acceptable form of discourse. Sort of like how Murray Rothbard couldn't bring himself to quit shilling for the racist, protectionist Pat Buchanan.

I'm not aware of what Rothbard said about Buchanan, so I can't comment on that. What I will say about Rothbard however is that there are plenty of things he said that I don't agree with and plenty of things he said that I do. As for your claim that I'm an alt-rightist, you will need to defend that claim.

It's not a claim so much as it is a nod and a wink. You aren't so clever by half.

Alt-right doesn't even have an established platform, but rather it is mostly a collection of different groups of people that leftists has labeled as alt-right.

What it is - and I say this as someone who's spent many, many long years on /pol/, LUElinks, etc. - is a collection of low-rent racial collectivists (the neoreactionaries and 'race realists' are the high-rent equivalent). They don't have a platform because they don't care about any other issues save for white supremacy; everything else they adopt is opportunistic, which is why you'll see them ****talk big business and socialism in the same breath.

But you know this, of course.

They don't have a platform because they're not one group of people, but rather a collection of different groups with different belief systems.

Funny how it all turned into attacking Bill Weld being phony, when the OP was just about his stance regarding Trump.

Many democrats against Trump, some conservatives against Trump. And now this one libertarian speaks out against Trump, he is a phony libertarian? You want to change the label 'libertarian" to 'very conservative', 'alt-right', or 'Trump party'?

If he's not taking just as harsh a stance against Clinton, yes.

He's always been a phony.
