Another twist on the surreal path to war...

  • Kremlin officials told the Russian outlet Agency they didn't know Putin was going to invade Ukraine.
  • Sources said the Kremlin was prepared for smaller sanctions over its recognition of Luhansk and Donetsk.
  • "Everything is ****ed," a source close to Putin's administration told Agency.

One unnamed senior official said people in the Kremlin "did not know" that it would be an all-out invasion and that many were shocked when news of the military assault broke, the outlet said.

In the run-up to the invasion, Putin's cabinet had only prepared to deal with Western sanctions introduced over Russia's decision to recognize the independence of the Ukrainian regions of Luhansk and Donetsk on February 21, not for an invasion, a source close to Putin's administration told Agency.

After Russia invaded, countries including the US and UK, as well as the EU, sanctioned Russian entities and individuals, seizing assets belonging to those closest to Putin and ejecting Russian banks from the SWIFT global financial system.

The Kremlin is particularly concerned by its ousting from SWIFT, the freezing of Russian foreign reserves, including by the US, and the exit of a string of Western companies from Russia, Agency reported.

An official went on to tell Agency that Kremlin officials cannot resign from their posts because it would be seen as a betrayal. "You can only quit to prison," they said.

The report comes as Western officials warned that Putin was so furious about the sanctions that he may target civilian areas in Ukraine to "set an example," The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Sounds like Putin has been reduced to a madman. This isn't going to end well for Ukraine.

Merkle said that Putin just doesn't seem to connect. After being warned repeatedly that any move on Ukraine would bring the most extreme response short of war, the guy is in a fury that it happened exactly as promised?

Now he thinks xtra killing his "slavic brothers" in Ukraine will somehow teach western governments not to oppose him? And now you can't resign cause to do so is disloyal and you get sent to prison?

God help the world.

We and our allies have our hands tied behind our backs, to not give Putin an excuse to go nuclear, but he has shown that he could at any minute with a manufactured excuse.

Hopefully our strategic geniuses still have some good tricks up their sleeves.

It's excruciating, heartbreaking and horrifying to think they're really going to stand by and watch Russia's slow takeover of Ukraine.

This all seems so familiar.

So they should do something about it. I mean, I do feel bad for the Russian people through all of this. But it is amazing how a country know for "macho" men and bad ass women also has a 100 year history of just taking all kinds of physical, economic, and mental oppression from one corrupt psycho after another. If only the Russian people had half the balls of Ukrainians.

Russia is a nation who seems destined to experience tragedy. It's in their literature, their history, their very being. For many centuries they were oppressed by the Mongols, then with their first Tsar decided to oppress everyone else, including Ukraine and the Cossacks.

As I have said, Russians treat everyone around them as either vassals or rivals. Putin, obviously, sees western nations as rivals...something to be beaten. Its as if the Russian identity depends on it. That, by the way, is part of macho culture. Who is stronger, who dominates, who is the weak one. And if you are weak, you are held in contempt and your weakness justifies your abuse. If you are equal, you are held as someone worthy of your anger to be beaten, and if you dominate, then you stew in resentment dreaming of the day of revenge.

It's just one dude then, is there not a sniper in the area? There has to be a way to oust Putin. No wonder he's sitting so far away from everyone, he must be one of the most wanted in the world.

Lindsey Graham gets slammed for proposing an obvious solution to the Ukraine invasion.
Putin has killed thousands of people and caused billions in damages and will probably be accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
But let one practical minded politician propose a surefire solution to the horrible invasion, and he gets crucified for his quick solution.

Tell me, Why shouldn't this be a topic of discussion?
Putin is the head of an army calling for the destruction of a sovereign country.
Would anyone be sad if a missile went into his dacha in Russia - with him in it?

I'm waiting for the righteous indignation of those who would never advocate the assassination of a leader of state.
But no one would have complained if Staufenberg had succeeded in killing Hitler? Would they?

We're so much better than that, right?

We have hate crimes trials for murders that already condemn murderers to life imprisonment. That makes a lot of sense, right?

Republicans, Democrats slam Lindsey Graham after he calls for Putin's assassination

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., was rebuked by lawmakers from across the political spectrum after calling for the assassination of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Is there a Brutus in Russia?” asked Graham via Twitter Thursday evening. “Is there a more successful Colonel Stauffenberg in the Russian military? The only way this ends is for somebody in Russia to take this guy out. You would be doing your country — and the world — a great service.”
Graham was referring to Marcus Junius Brutus, who was among Julius Caesar’s assassins in 44 B.C., and Claus von Stauffenberg, a German officer who attempted to kill Adolf Hitler with a briefcase bomb in 1944 and was executed after the Nazi leader survived the blast.

The Republican senator explained his reasoning by adding, “The only people who can fix this are the Russian people. Easy to say, hard to do. Unless you want to live in darkness for the rest of your life, be isolated from the rest of the world in abject poverty, and live in darkness you need to step up to the plate.”
President Biden and other NATO leaders have been insistent about avoiding war with Russia, a nation with an estimated 6,000 nuclear weapons. Ukraine has so far held out against the Russian invasion that began last week, but Friday saw the shelling and takeover of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant and the continued siege of key ports.

The number of Ukrainian refugees has now topped 1 million as the death toll in the country continues to mount. Earlier this week, a Russian businessman based in California offered a $1 million bounty for anyone who arrested Putin as a war criminal.

Shitty washington illiterate propaganda! The idea of "ukraine" didn't even exist back then!

Not by the name Ukraine, but certainly it existed with an identity separate from the Duchy of Moscow.

I agree. I have lots of issues with Graham, but I give him credit for being one of the few willing to call for it outload.

How the hell is "outrageous" to call for the killing of a monster, a world pariah submitting innocent and harmless nations to murder and death? Putin is the mastermind and executioner of Ukraine, and as such as culpable as Bin Laden or Hitler. How dare anyone assume he has the right to diplomatic immunity or reasonable treatment. He is the enemy, you wade into them, you spill their blood. You make this bastard die for his "empire".

Indeed, like Bin Laden a huge bounty ought to be put on his head, this time "DEAD OR ALIVE", 100 MILLION DOLLARS.

"Bring me the head of Valdimer Putin" ought to be the watchword of the 21st century.
