The moment you scrape beneath the thin veneer of faux "our western values" Ukraine, the stench of chronic Russophobia, Hungaryphobia, Judeophobia, Romaniaphobia bubbles to the surface. It's inescapable. Except to the diehard pro Kyiv folks: who have clamped their nostrils shut with iron nose clips; plugged their ears shut with wads of cotton; and some nice linen blindfolds for the eyes. A perfect farce of the proverbial Three Monkeys. They will not see Stepan "Nazi Collaborator" Banderas even if that notorious killer and mass murderer penetrated their cocoon with his instruments of death.

The fact of the matter is Ukraine is in many ways the equivalent of the defunct Yugoslavia. Riven by frightful ethnic rivalries. It is ancient. There are no heroes or villains. The Ukrainian is no more an angel that the Russian is a demon. When the Ukrainian had his opportunity he exacted his pound of fresh from the bear.

So why is the Mayor of Kharkiv getting fired for speaking Russian? We are informed ethnic Russians are not discriminated in Ukraine; maybe ethinc Russians in Ukraine know better.

"""Ukrainian authorities have fined the mayor of Kharkov, Igor Terekhov, nearly 100 euros for speaking Russian on television and managing his social networks in the same language, as he would have violated a law that places Ukrainian as the vehicular language throughout the state, even before the Russian invasion."""

Officials acting in their capacity as government officials are required to speak official government language.

So what?

I don't think it's an uncommon requirement across countries.

Maybe they are also required to venerate Nazi Collaborationist Stepan Banderas. Vinnitsa City Council in west Ukraine already named a street after that genocide facilitator. Ukraine is turning into a freak show. And people wonder why ethnic Russians want out?

Meh.

Ukranians turn to Bandera as a symbol of independence and not because he was an anti-semitic / anti-Polish racist ahole.

The more Russians attack, starting 2014, the more Ukranians will elevate Bandera... while continuing to vote for Jewish President and many other Jewish government officials.

Hilarious .Russian is the lingua franca for Crimea, Donbas and Kharkiv

Well, the Ku Klux Klan is also a symbol of independence I suppose. Why not? By the way minority Russians in Ukraine do not consider Stepan Banderas a symbol of independence. To them he was a killer and Nazi Collaborator.

Kind of like the more the Federal Government attacked, southerners turned to the Ku Klux Klan? Good job

If the Mayor of a Russian speaking City like Kharkiv is fined for speaking Russian, what is it like for the Joe Russian at ground level?

Because KKK never fought for independence of the US from all the countries trying to invade the US.

That's true. Before 2014 most of Ukraine had negative attitudes toward Bandera... Then Russians attacked. And Bandera became more popular. Guess what happened after Feb 2022.

Trust me, I am no fan of Bandera and it brings me no joy that so many Ukranians elevate him. Yet I realize they don't do it because they all suddenly became anti-Semites in 2014.

Your excuse for Nazi Collaborator Stepan Banderas and his adorers is as vile as excusing adorers of the Ku Klux Klan. There is no excuse for it. So dont talk of empathy for anyone elevating that freak to Hero Status

Your excuse for Nazi Collaborator Stepan Banderas ...

I never excused him ...

There is also no excuse for Putin and his adorers. So dont talk of empathy for anyone elevating that freak to Hero Status.

He certainly killed a lot more people than Bandera.

Hmm.

Your excuse for venerating Ye and his adorers is as vile as excusing adorers of Banderas.

So why is the Mayor of Kharkiv getting fired for speaking Russian?
Were you in Los Angeles or Southern California when the English-only mania was at its fiercest? Remember the successful move to abolish bilingual [English-Spanish] education in L.A. public schools? The CA GOP stirred up fear and paranoia of a Latino invasion and occupation of El Pueblo de la Nuestra Senora Reina de Los Angeles. (Please imagine a perfect tilde above the letter ‘n’ in the Spanish for ‘lady’.)
