Key Russian warship 'severely' damaged in the Black Sea

The Moskva heavy missile cruiser.

Russia said the flagship of its Black Sea fleet was "severely" damaged Wednesday and its crew evacuated following an explosion that a Ukrainian official said was a result of a missile strike. Odesa Gov. Maksym Marchenko said on Telegram that Ukrainian forces struck the guided-missile cruiser Moskva — the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet — with two missiles and caused “serious damage.” The cruiser usually has about 500 officers and crew, according to The Associated Press. Hours later, Russia’s Ministry of Defense said ammunition had exploded on Moskva as a result of "a fire," according to the state news agency Tass. “As a result of a fire, ammunition detonated on the Moskva missile cruiser. The ship was seriously damaged. The crew was completely evacuated,” the ministry added.

Fantastic. This Russian warship has been firing cruise missiles into Ukraine.

Hopefully, this will force Moscow to order all remaining warships to withdraw from the Black Sea.

Crew evacuates Russian flagship after Ukraine boasts of missile attack

Moscow says there was a fire on the ship; Ukraine says they hit it with a missile. Either way, it's a huge black eye for Putin.

Apparently the ship is still afloat, but is being towed back to port.

One fault many found with the Russian warship design is the heavy munition load. The concept was born from the idea the US Navy carriers were the target, and the Russian ships needed to get off a massive barrage before being attacked by carrier attack aircraft. Second concept was the Russians could never big a large navy, so each ship had to be heavily laden with armaments.

Either way Russian ships are floating powder kegs. I imagine the Russians never thought the Ukrainians would dream to attack them out at sea...

Stupid is as Stupid does... ✌️

Hmmmmm....wonder where the Ukrainians got those anti-ship missiles? Haha.

The flagship of the Russian fleet, a guided missile cruiser, went boom. To top it off, the ship was named Moskva.

And previously received the message "Russian warship, go **** yourself".

Nice to get a bit of good news against the terrorist Putin and in favor of the Ukrainians. Hoping things continue in this direction and this senseless war/genocide comes to a halt.

I was reading an article today about this story. It's amazing for 2 reasons:

1) How a single cruiser could end up being so pivotal to key Russian invasion plans.. for instance, an amphibious invasion is now off the table logistically without the Moskva.
2) For how valuable as the Movska was, it was INSANE for the Russians to be manuevering her so close to shore.

The Moskva is a key piece of the Russian invasion plan that they can't replace.

They may now find it hard to even maintain supply lines to Crimea.

It's one of those stories where the facts don't really match... in this instance it is hard to square "severely damaged" and "crew evacuated". If crew was evacuated then the ship was destryed... or, at least I wouldn't expect a crew to abandon ship on a craft that can be saved.

Was it the result of incompetence in securing the ship, or incompetence in operating it? The "ammunition explosion" is Russian agitprop for "Ukrainian missile strike"... the Neptune missile is supposed to explode when it hits a ship. It's a design element. ;)

What's most significant is this is the ship that's supposed to coordinate defense of the fleet. The rest of the fleet is now very vulnerable.

There are so many eyes on that area of the world that I don't think the Russians can hide a missile strike for long, if it was a missile strike.

You don't have to wonder if you keep up with the news.
The missile the Ukrainians say they used is a Neptune missile which is their improved version of a Russian missile.

I wonder if the Russians are into redundancies or they are just as incompetent and outdated in that as the rest of their military strategies.

The Ukrainian High Command and the Mayor of Odesa (fired from) said two Ukrainian Neptune anti-ship cruise missiles were fired at the Moskva.

The Moskva was struck 60-65 nautical miles south of Odesa.

The Neptune has a range of 200 miles.

Apparently the ship is still afloat, but is being towed back to port.
Yes it was afloat for a while before they abandoned it as far as i know.

In a twist of irony, the Moskva was built in the shipyards at the Ukrainian port of Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine and entered service in the early 1980's.

The Moskva has had 16 tubes (8+8) on its deck for various cruise missiles.

Well, I read they did move their ships south... that's a good direction, away from Ukraine. As long as their missiles can't still hit inland from there.

Can you imagine being a regular old merchant ship trying to make a delivery on the Black Sea right now, with missiles winging overhead, etc? Dangerous job for them, too.
