Kerry denounces use of energy as weapon
"BRUSSELS (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is denouncing the use of energy as a weapon, a day after Russia sharply hiked the price for natural gas to Ukraine.
Kerry says supplies of oil and gas have to be secured throughout the world in order to prevent their being used as political leverage or tools of aggression. He said no nation should be able to use energy to "stymie a people's aspirations."
Kerry spoke Wednesday at a meeting of the US-EU Energy Council at European Union headquarters in Brussels.
Russia also threatened to reclaim billions in previous discounts for Ukraine, raising the heat on its cash-strapped government. The move is expected to eventually hit Ukrainian consumers hard. Household gas prices in Ukraine are set to rise 50 percent beginning May 1."

Does this mean that since Putin was selling gas to Ukraine at 60% of World market, that the USA and IMF are going to sell Ukraine dollars at 60% of World market value?

Does this reflect an organized demonization of Russia/Putin? Putin was selling Ukraine discount energy.

Will Western Media co-operate in this demonization?

The Russian cheap gas was the only foreign effort to help Ukraine and should Russia be punished for helping Ukraine?

It's silly posturing by Kerry. The fact is that Ukraine depended on Russia for gas, and Russia discounted that gas for political reasons

The previous discount was part of a financial lifeline Russian President Vladimir Putin offered to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich after his decision to ditch a pact with the European Union in favour of closer ties with Moscow.

That being the case, why would Russia continue discounting gas prices without the political benefits?

That being the case, why would Russia continue discounting gas prices without the political benefits?

I'm quite sure if the USA/IMF sells the Ukraine dollars at sixty cents per each that Russia would sell gas again at sixty cents on the dollar of World Market value. It is the USA/IMF that are the bad guys in this scenario. Kerry's posturing is Moronomics and he has a world stage to flaunt his ignorance of economics, or so it would appear.

If you know of some Country helping Ukraine, you should detail that information in your replies. Unless the USA is completely lacking in Intelligence capability, they knew that Ukrainian instability would have this ENERGY result, ergo it must be part of the plan. If not, we're stupid. As there is absolutely no possible way for the U.S to supply enough natural gas to Ukraine, let alone the EU or even somehow ship it over there if we could the point is mute for the most part. Kerry can complain all he wants, and Russia will do as it pleases with it's own energy supplies.

The EU is over a barrel and it's friends can do nothing but watch.

The EU is over a barrel and it's friends can do nothing but watch.

The EU is not 'over a barrel' they receive less than 10% of their energy supplies from Russia and have the capacity to increasingly diversify their natural gas imports and substitute in different electricity loads in the interim. This crisis is orders of magnitudes less severe than lets say the OPEC crisis and infinitely more manageable. It is however uncomfortable and not something that many European countries are eager to confront in the midst of economic recovery--but if it needs to happen it will and it can.

Likewise the situation in Ukraine is less flexible but not impossible. At worst you would see an IMF/Western subsidization of Ukrainian gas imports from Russia over the next few years as sources are diversified. It would suck and it would be expensive but it is certainly doable. If that even becomes necessary.

Photographic proof? Unless you expect us to provide you with detailed geospatial data with ORBAT information we can't give you 'photographic' evidence of 40,000 soldiers. However we can give you details that have been universally reported with photos of Russian troops. I suspect you will dismiss these because we couldn't literally provide you with a photo with 40,000 Russian troops in it.

Russian troops aren't literally standing within a few hundred feet of the border. They are quartered at Russian military facilities in the Southern District which is a constellation of bases stretching from Voronezh to Rostov. These are motorized infantry with attendant logistical support and are capable of a rapid move into Ukraine if so desired. Russia has freely admitted the deployment of troops to these regions for 'exercises' it merely denies their scope and intent.

People read my posts because I try to be informative, funny, sarcastic, condescending, entertaining, thought provoking, truthful, and as my avatar states, iconoclastic, among other things. Sometimes I actually accomplish the requisite desires and sometimes not. It swings both ways , don't ya' know? I truly enjoy a battle of wits, shame you don't have the equiptment to play.
