Mariners announce Ken Griffey Jr. retiring - ESPN

Ken Griffey Jr. retired Wednesday night, ending one of the great careers in baseball history.

The 40-year-old Griffey told the Mariners that he was done playing, and manager Don Wakamatsu made the announcement before Seattle faced Minnesota.

Wow. Griffey was one of those players I always loved to watch play. A decent guy who loved the game, excelled at it, and always seemed to be having fun. He was one of the greats during my lifetime.

Sort of wished he'd done it before this year's events, but nevertheless, he's a true good guy and probably one of the few baseball players from my childhood who is still a hero.

Hopefully he still gets into the Hall of Fame so my Griffey Jr. rookie cards skyrocket in value.
