Kamala Harris holds first rally as 2020 presidential candidate

I'm a firm subscriber to the "swinging pendulum" theory of presidential elections. We elect new presidents that are pendulumatically different than their predecessors. Now I don't know if "pendulmatically" is a legit word or not, 'cuz I just made it up now on the spot. But I think you know what I mean. We swing from Dem to Repub, to back again. And from liberal, to conservative, and back again. It always happens.

It's for the reason above, that I believe a message like Kamala's will be music to many American's ears, as it was with Obama coming out of the Cheney driven Republican White House.

Interesting thought. Forgive me, though, if I think things have changed a bit thanks to Trump. I'm not sure the pendulum swing is there anymore. I hope it is, certainly, but I can't be certain.

I'm tossing this video here in this forum, simply as a departure point for discussion. But I think her speech is pretty good and worth watching, if you're interested. (speech starts at approx 1:05:00)

[...]

So, anyone have any thoughts on her?

I got that thing I got when I saw Obama speak, same kind of feeling. But, she's to the left of Obama, and she's just as passionate, she's embracing many of Bernie's values, health care is a right, education is a right, hitting all the right notes for us progressives, higher minimum wages. But, I worry if she won the primary, is she too far to the left to beat Trump?

I think she can do it. I think most people are sick of Trump, they are sick of all the scandals and chaos, sick of it.

Trump didn't win. Hillary lost. The sooner the Dems realize that, the better. Then they can put forward someone with real credibility.

That has nothing to do with the OP.

Trump only won because of a fluke in the electoral college. Hillary was expected to get more votes, and she did, and normally this would automatically mean she'd have won the prez, but no one foresaw the EC not matching up. Maybe on a close race, but not on one where the gap was 3 million votes.

That is what is a fluke.

And the sooner repubs realize that, they will quit drumming up this "get over it" schtick, it's getting old.

I see what you're saying, but that list is an optimistic "good feelings" list, and quite frankly it's exactly what Obama ran on and it served him well. In fact, Kamala reminds me a fair amount of Obama.

In general, Americans are an optimistic people and like optimistic messages. In addition, we tend to yo-yo with our Presidential choices; we swing the pendulum to & fro in terms of Presidential temperament and also in party. It's for these reasons, after four years of Trump's doom & gloom and fight & destroy, that I think the country will be looking for a message more like Harris' (& Obama's).

Do you think the people are going to fall for that bull****, again?

"If you like your civil rights, you can keep your civil rights...period!"

Meh. Nothing about her exites me. She's about as vanilla and boring as you can get.

Yeah, well, we're basically creating our fantasy team here. A Harris/Warren or Harris/Sanders ticket would be epic.

I would include O'Rourke but I have no clue what he intends to do. If he believes he's a serious candidate then personally I think he's dragging his feet.

He's a perfect VP nominee if you ask me. He draws crowds, gives great speeches, hits the issues very well. And conservatives are so scared of him they'll be attacking him which leaves some room for the actual candidate to breath. Along with the fact that with 8 years as VP, he would be an incredibly strong contender for Pres at that point.

I'm not sure I'd for him in the primary, but I'd happily vote for him on a ticket as VP.

If she stays away from identity politics and encourages the rest of her party to, she may have a shot. And the latest Willie Brown news doesn't help.

No, it doesn't. How sad that in 2019 we're all going to hear the old "sleeping her way to the top" thing.

There is no evidence that Harris is a religious bigot, nor was any presented in that piece, or other pieces related to it.

If you say so.

The only people who’ll be pushing that line (and pretending to care) are people like you who consistently run defense for trump after he slept with a porn star and committed campaign fraud over it, bragged about committing sexual assault and liked to walked in on underage girls in dressing rooms. Next to trump, Harris is a virgin. Besides, the American people have decided that extramarital affairs, in and of themselves, are no longer election deal killers.

I've followed Kamala since mid last year, and did a bit of mild research on her over the months. I liked what I saw then, and now after watching her first speech live, contained in the video above, I really like what I saw today.

She has a compelling story. She was born of Indian and Jamaican immigrant parents, who both became educated professionals and succeeded in staking their place in this great American dream of ours. She is a lifetime prosecutor, yet seems to show reasonable benevolence to finding societal solutions to crime besides simply locking citizens up. She also has a fairly strong leaning to social-democracy with her platform of Medicaid for all, along with subsidized higher education.

She pushes "truth" and "unity", which is quite refreshing and in stark contrast to the present administration. She believes as Americans we have more in common, than what tears us apart. She seems to be promoting an "upbeat", rather than "anger" campaign. And she wants to promote science.

I like her "For the People" slogan, referring to her being a life-long prosecutor, and even her campaign sign's lettering is both blue & red. I really like the blue & red bit

Right now, I like what I see - a lot. She checks a lot of my boxes. She also reminds me a lot of Obama, to be honest. And that's a good thing (IMO). Time will tell.

So, anyone have any thoughts on her?

She's certainly attractive and very articulate. I like her way of speaking.

I don't know much about her politics, but she is an attention grabber for sure.

ETA I do love her back story, too. That's the American dream.

Harris will be one to watch, for sure. Dems and many independents eat that **** up. Free everything. Free income. Utopia. Grab guns. Grab wealth.
Harris appeals to the lowest common denominator in America-those who believe they are owed something and are happy to take, take, take.

She's not a very good public speaker. Sort of blah.

"Sleeping" herself into political positions is now considered The American Dream?!? :lamo

So, basically, she's running on Bernie's platform ...

When one suggests that another's religious views are disqualifying for office, then yes, one is a religious bigot, never mind the Constitutional issue.

I know, I know; you don't want to see it, so you won't ever.

She's not my first choice. She's not even my second choice. A bit better than what we have now, though (okay a LOT better, particularly on the eyes).
