July 4th declared freedom, September 17th denied it

i am saying people have been enslaved before america, and you are trying to look at america of the 1700's with today's eyes, and that's not possible.

in 50 to 100 years from now people are going to look at america and the people on it in 2013, and they will wonder why we did things we did, and there are going to be people who will, attack us for our actions we do now.

so as you attack the people of the past, you will be attacked also.

Nope, I'm on the right side of history on all social issues of the day.

Actually, slavery is still legal in the US. Read the 13th amendment.

Actually, it would be a most extraordinary reading of the 13th Amendment to derive from that text that slavery is still legal in the U.S.

It would be a most insightful and astute reading of ObamaCare to recognize that it is actually the institution of a neo-slavery, one not necessitating any chains, in which the government claims de facto ownership of each and every American citizen, and the ability to dictate the most intimate terms of their lives, and even the value of that life itself.

Actually, no. The 13th amendment states that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." (13th Amendment | U.S. Constitution | LII / Legal Information Institute)

Thus, slavery is legal if the person has been convicted of a crime.

yes, I know what the 13th Amendment indicates, however I also understand what it indicates; evidently you do not.

That comma following "servitude" is an indication that what follows clarifies that "involuntary servitude" and not slavery itself.

We do not have slavery as a result of conviction for a crime. What we do have is involuntary servitude as a result of conviction of a crime, wherein a person may be denied their freedom, against their will. Those persons incarcerated in prisons quite obviously are not enslaved and owned by anyone, not even the government.

It is a ridiculous argument to claim that the 13th Amendment legalizes slavery.

Slavery is illegal in the USA. Involuntary servitude is legal for convicted criminals.
