Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has warned of the "gradual disappearance" of independent media in Russia, and urged President Vladimir Putin to repeal a "draconian 'foreign agents' law" that has been used to target RFE/RL and other news outlets. In a statement issued on June 16, the Paris-based media watchdog lists the demise of the Russia-based VTimes and risks to other media outlets such as the Latvian-based Meduza. "Only a handful of independent media outlets are managing to survive the growing pressure from the authorities," it says, citing "intimidation attempts" against TV Dozhd, Fortanga and Chernovik in the North Caucasus, as well as the Kaliningrad-based Novye Kolesa. "The gradual disappearance of independent outlets from the Russian media landscape in the past few years and the recent acceleration of this process are very disturbing," said Jeanne Cavelier, the head of RSF’s Eastern Europe and Central Asia desk. "We urge Vladimir Putin and the Russian justice ministry to immediately repeal the 'foreign agents' law, which is undermining media pluralism, throttling independent media and slowly killing them off."

The labeling of "foreign agents" has been interpreted by many civil society activists as another tool for the Kremlin to intimidate Russia's political opposition, especially with parliamentary elections looming in September and the ruling United Russia party slumping in opinion polls. "The Russian government has worked hard to destabilize media outlets in recent years," RSF said, with "around 20 draconian laws targeting both traditional and online media" since major anti-Putin demonstrations eight years ago. The watchdog said the Russian state media regulator, Roskomnadzor, which it calls "a digital press freedom predator,” has become “increasingly intrusive since first establishing a blacklist of websites in 2012."

The only media available in Russia will be state-owned TASS, state-owned RT, state-owned Sputnik, and Russia Channel One.

Dang!

We didn't need a "watchdog" to tell us that!

That's like telling us China censors the media! (By the way, Hong Kong cops -- under orders from Beijing -- have just arrested top editors of Hong Kong's Apple Daily. The owner is already in jail.)

Of course, Americans should be wary of criticizing censorship in other countries. Our media is not exactly "free." So-called liberals (my foot!) control most of the media.

Didn't see you bringing it up until RSF did.

Russia has been killing of independent media for a decade. You can only operate legally in Russia if you are run by the state or tow the propaganda. And this is not something new, it has gone on for quite some time.

Indeed. But the Kremlin's media repression has surged within the past two years. There is a correlation between Putin's shrinking popularity and the increased repressions.

Seeing what occurred in neighboring Belarus, the Putin regime is taking no chances regarding the September elections.

In the Internet age... they are sitting on a serious form of reasoning that somewhere they allegedly ban the media.
And the whole argument boils down to the fact that the Russian media funded from abroad are obliged to mark themselves as foreign agents.. uh-huh... and is it okay that we have seen it in the United States?

The Kremlin-owned media companies RT and Sputnik were directly implicated by the Mueller Report in the Russian election meddling of the 2016 and 2018 US elections.

Since the Russian "elections" are scheduled for September 19, 2021, you will have to show us how VTimes, Meduza, Newsru, etc have been meddling in the 2021 election.
