People ask me: "who is John Galt" however, I say read Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" then they think John Galt is a person...

John Galt is an idea not a person...

I suppose that's only my interpretation of John Galt..

Anyone interested in discussing the philosophy behind John Galt?

Discussing Ayn Rand philosophy, no thanks. I think that's most people view on this.

I'm always amused by the people claiming to be John Galt, big ego there to be claiming to be the representation of the power of the human spirit and mind.

And I thought you were John Galt, Mr. The timezones are created by Earth's gravity.

Are you suggesting I'm not awesome enough to be John Galt?

Big Ego? He was a railroad grunt for most of his life.

Well, accrording to the "White Pages" there are at least 77 people in the USA and Canada named "John Galt." John Galt | WhitePages

Sooo....which John Galt are you asking about???? LOL Jk ;)

In this digital age they really ask you that? I thought google was faster than asking a meat bag.

The problem is that entire posts seems more evangelical than <something else>. I mean, why the evasive answer? Why refer them to the entire book? Why put it in your sig if you don't intend to explain it, or worse, don't understand it enough to explain it in a sentence or two?

The issue with Galt/Rand in your sig and you'll see in responses is that it's basically a slam on liberals, the democratic party, socialism, communism, big government, and a smattering of the average joe that uses government services. That's a lot of offended people. And they have, as all such groups offended and tied to politics do, demonized Rand and anything associated with Rand such that in the general public it's seen as cultish, insane, unethical, insert your own negative demonized propaganda. It also has that feel of some "trying to be cool by association" thing. Ooh mysterious, "who is john galt!?!" Some of the demonization, while biased and one-sided, has some truth to it too (as do all such figures and ideas).

Liberal idealism is and was in so much art at the time, it was good and artistically important (whether it was a great work itself is irrelevant) to have an anti-socialist/liberal styled theme get some popularity, it increases the awareness on such issues IMO. And it still does today.

I thought they were claiming that they can know, and they can do. The point was empowering every man, the opposite of ego.
Certainly a scary concept for those in power, or for those who get power by providing for every man through taxes...

Not the character but the people who hold signs at rallies that say "I am John Galt" its simple egoism, nothing more. The ego and desire to be important and special can manifest itself in many ways, this is just another example.

IMO John Galt is not about egotism, he's the man who believed that there are no bad jobs and despite his intelligence had no qualms about being a day laborer.

You can be John Galt too you know...

I suppose my OP was too difficult to understand, when IMO I thought it was pretty blunt.

Like I said, feeding the ego, I know, I can do, and other's do not, I'm special, I'm better, others are not.

IMO, only collectivists have the capability of having an ego... Individualists just don't give a **** about superiority. I only say that because people who focus on their own complex tend to NOT get ahead in life while those who look past such personality flaws focus on success and thrive in a free market.

That's the way I see it at least..

People with egos drive green cars to show the world how green they are. They also buy hemp shopping bags to show how green they are when they go shopping.

They may as well tattoo "ego" on their forehead because their statement is clearly "I support Obama" 99% of the time.

Of course these are the same idiots who think Ernesto Lynch was a ****ing saint...

*GASP*

Mr. Nothing to see here, no scandal to worry about, the government does no wrong is a looter?

As anyone in the military, I'm paid with tax dollars. 100% of my income comes from the government.

That they do, same folks who walk around with a sign that says I'm John Galt or talk about how they are better than other folks for any reason.

John Galt is a figment of Ayn Rand's self-centered imagination.

Ayn Rand's Philosophy can be boiled down to the idea that there is no human society, That selfishness is a virtue and that in this dog-eat-dog world it's every person for him or her self.

Ayn Rand's totally un-empathetic objectivism will never rule in the USA

No matter what Ayn Rand and her cult of disciples may try to tell the world, selfishness and greed are not good things. They never were and they never will be.

Check with your mama and Jesus Christ and see what they have to say on the subject.

I love how you just make **** up..

Why do you believe that I believe I am better than others?

Sure, I certainly have more knowledge than others and am more educated than others but that doesn't translate into "better" because anyone can learn - it just takes time, interest and dedication...

I'm interested in discussing ideas not knee-jerk partisan opinions. I want a real exchange of ideas not "I hate you because ______ and that's the party line." If you cant jibe with that then get off the boat.

Thank you for your service. Men in the service are not looters to me and I apologize for suggesting such.

One of my facebook friends is a big Ayn Rand fan, he wrote this one day on his wall.

Last night I fell asleep while watching Atlas Shrugged Part II, and wound up continuing the film in my dreams. When I awoke, I was terribly shaken, and it took me a couple of minutes to evaluate my surroundings and calm myself. That never happens anymore.

I find it very interesting that the most terrifying scenario my mind could conjure up is one in which my life and my talents are no longer my property, but the property of society. I believe that just two years ago this wouldn't have been the case, and I think its a sign that I've really begun to integrate concepts of Objectivism and Libertarian philosophies beyond a level of conscious political utilitarianism to a level where it's become a foundational element of my psyche. The value of my own life has moved beyond a logical truth, to a visceral one.

It feels good.

No it doesn't.....Rand's philosophy "boils down to" free will and that the individual has the virtue to make any choice he or she decides.

The simple fact that government/collectivism makes choices for the individual doesn't mean the individual is selfish...

Do you not see the flaw in your theory?

You may as well say all people are born selfish and only government via intervention can force people do be kind to another individual...

You see - this is why the progressive philosophy is epic bull**** --- because you believe humans are inherently bad and government needs to regulate humanity.

You a robot or a person.... Would you like to be considered an individual or a collectivist (or rather a number)...

Like I said, feeding the ego, I know, I can do, and other's do not, I'm special, I'm better, others are not.
Why would someone who admits to themselves that they can do and know, are "better", when basically everyone has those attributes? Sounds defensive.
Rand didn't bash people who really couldn't do, or couldn't know (mentally and physically disabled), so it certainly was NOT saying they were better than those who absolutely could not do those things.

Self empowerment = feeding the ego? Recognizing personal empowerment, and thus responsibility, is maturity, not ego, IMO.

All my pay comes from the government, I'm one of the parasite types.
Evidence to support your biased responses I suppose. Carry on!

And you're better than the cultist, feeding your ego yes?

You're so cool Brewster.
