Democrats have again chosen to nominate a centrist and a moderate for President against Donald Trump. Hillary Clinton was considered a strong candidate by many people but still lost (the electoral college) against Trump in 2016.

Why do Democrats believe Biden will succeed where Hillary failed? Why is Biden the stronger candidate than Clinton to defeat Trump? Or do you think Clinton was actually a better candidate to defeat Trump?

Put bluntly, how have democrats changed so that the election result will be different in 2020 than it was in 2016?

1. Biden is likable and Trump isn't. Likability and empathy are giant factors in electability.
2. The criminal investigation shoe is on the other foot. This time around, it's the Republican candidate who's under criminal investigation.
3. Trump is no longer an unknown quantity. We know he's as bad as we feared he would be. In 2016 there was a pervasive belief that the office of the Presidency would make him a more serious leader, or at the very least that the "adults in the room" would constrain his worst impulses. Neither of those two ended up happening.
4. The incumbent failed perfectly the crisis test. Trump chose to do nothing in the face of the worst health crisis in decades, and now 167,000 Americans are dead as a result.
5. Unlike 2016, the economy is in shambles, and it's the direct result of the incumbent's actions (or lack of them).
6. In 2016, Democrats were smug in their assumed victory. Now they are terrified, believing that the election is not only not in the bag, but that a second Trump term represents an existential threat.
7. Unlike in 2016, it's understood that the Democratic candidate has adopted a large swath of extremely progressive positions as the result of the coalition he formed with Sanders and Warren.

There are also some significant Trump advantages, but this thread appears to be aimed at discussing the Democratic advantages as a contrast to 2016, so that's what I've done.

The far left are delusional if they believe Hillary lost because she wasn't far enough left. She lost because she was a crook. People didn't like her. And, she lost because during Obama's tenure, Democrats lost over 1000 seats to Republicans and somehow thought that they could win the presidency in spite of that. People also were tired of so called dynasties. If Biden loses it would be a very big mistake to pin the loss on so called centrist candidates. Polls have shown that only a small minority of Americans want Democratic Socialism so, to think that you're losing because your candidates aren't far left enough you are sadly mistaken. Polls have Biden up by at least 6 points, some as much as 14. If Bernie had been the nominee, it would have been a whole lot easier for Trump to win because Independents and moderates, who are the ones who don't want socialism, would be forced to vote for Trump or not vote at all. A lot of Bernie bros have big mouths but wouldn't have gone out to vote or even filled out a paper ballot to mail in. They believe their big mouths will influence others to vote for Bernie while they stay at their parents' homes and play video games on election day.

The right wing painted her as a crook, and the media picked up those accusations even though they knew they weren't made in good faith. That's why she lost.

You would think that if she was such a crook, at least one of the countless Republican-led investigations into her would have concluded that. Curiously, none have.

It's time to drop the delusion. The notion that she was a crook has always been in your head.

Hilary had her chance and lost. Way to much has come out since to make her a valid alternative today. Time will tell if Biden can get the win.

The economy is in shambles as a direct result of Democrats insisting that everyone stay locked down through November.

Trump has done everything in his power to try to counter their efforts to tank the economy.

She was cleared of wrongdoing in terms of using a private server.

I don't see anything here stating she was cleared of the accusation that she had an aide smash her phone.

You don't get to pull crap out of your ass and demand that somebody else clear it in an investigation.

Joe Biden has a penis which is a big advantage.

Everyone likes Joe Biden, even republicans, again a big advantage.

Cardinal, come on...This is about Benghazi

Both of us, apparently, have been searching for half an hour, and neither one of us can find anything about Hillary being cleared of charges that an aide smashed her phone with a hammer.

And I posted a video from CNN, of all sources, verifying that it was true.

And another...

Whitewater: Case Closed
