President Joe Biden trails former President Donald Trump by three percentage points in a hypothetical 2024 rematch, 45 to 42 percent, in a new poll of just over 1,000 registered voters from Emerson College.
The poll presented several questions on the Biden administration's actions regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine, inflation, COVID and other political questions.
The poll of 1,023 registered voters was conducted over the weekend and had a "credibility interval," similar to a margin of error, of 3 percent, meaning Biden is anywhere from even to behind Trump by up to 6 percent within this sample of Americans.
Support for Biden or Trump in a potential 2024 race has been close across recent polls, with significant partisan divides consistently present, along with differences dovetailing with COVID vaccination status and education level. Biden's approval rating is nearly identical to Trump's at the same point in his presidency, and a poll last week showed the former president narrowly defeating Biden in a 2024 rematch.
While nearly 60 percent of voters approve of Biden's upcoming trip to Brussels for the summit of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) leaders this week, about half of those surveyed said they also believe the Biden administration should prioritize domestic issues rather than the war in Ukraine, according to the Emerson College poll.
Biden's approval rating climbed to 43 percent, one percent higher than another Emerson poll last month, while his disapproval rating also dropped a point to 49 percent.
A massive 83 percent of those surveyed reported experiencing some form of hardship because of inflation and increased prices in recent weeks, with 40 percent saying that prices were causing significant hardship and 43 percent classifying their experience as "some" hardship.
Nearly 40 percent of those surveyed said they blamed the Biden administration for the record-high gas prices in recent weeks, with about 20 percent blaming the sanctions placed on Russia for the nation's invasion of Ukraine and about 18 percent blaming oil and gas companies for raising prices.
The economy (37 percent), health care (14 percent) and the war in Ukraine (12 percent) were the only issues to chart above 10 percent as the most important issue on the minds of those surveyed.
Just 24 percent of those surveyed said COVID is a "major" threat. Last month's Emerson poll reported 28 percent of respondents calling it a major threat.
Looks about right at this point.
