Jimmy Carter on George Zimmerman Verdict: ‘Right Decision’ - ABC News

“I think the jury made the right decision based on the evidence presented, because the prosecution inadvertently set the standard so high that the jury had to be convinced that it was a deliberate act by Zimmerman, that he was not at all defending himself,” Carter told Atlanta NBC affiliate WXIA-TV.

On Saturday, Zimmerman was found innocent by a jury in Florida. He shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in February 2012, Zimmerman maintains in self defense.

The former president and Georgia governor discussed the verdict, and what it says about race in America, in an on-camera interview with the station.

“It’s not a moral question, it was a legal question, and the American law requires that the jury listen to the evidence presented,” Carter said. “The action that was taken in the courtroom was not to bring in the race issue at all. The prosecution avoided that subject quite clearly.”

No doubt he's a sane person. He wasn't a bad president, either. He just told Americans stuff they didn't want to hear, so they kicked him out of office. Like Nixon, there was a smear campaign against him that resulted in the end of his presidency. He's also fair and non-partisan on the Middle East issue, as anyone who reads his book "Peace not Apartheid" will realize.

Carter's anger, rightly or wrongly, is with Israel, not the Jews.

Israel has learned their policies from America. Both countries use excessive force to make their points. Both countries have disproportionate militaries. Both countries have crooked politicians. Both countries have vested military industrial complexes. Both countries are hated by many around the world.

I thought Carter was a terrible president who was elected by backlash, not by merit.

Forget that trivial crap. What about that Aaron Hernandez of the New England Patriots? Do you think he is guilty of murder - or is just being singled out because he's Latino? This is what matters for Americans to know about and debate next.

I agree. I like Carter. That said, his nomination for president was one of the worst things the Democratic party ever did. Vaguely akin to similar harebrained ideas, like holding the convention in NC and CO......................
