In a private conversation inadvertently captured by voicemail, Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jerry Brown or one of his associates can be heard referring to his Republican opponent Meg Whitman as a "whore," saying she cut a deal protecting law enforcement pensions while the two candidates competed for police endorsements.

The comment came after Brown called the Los Angeles Police Protective League in early September to ask for its endorsement. He left a voicemail asking Scott Rate, a union official, to call him, then apparently believed he had hung up the phone. The voicemail captured the ensuing conversation between Brown and his aides...

"Do we want to put an ad out? … That I have been warned if I crack down on pensions, I will be — that they'll go to Whitman, and that's where they'll go because they know Whitman will give 'em, will cut them a deal, but I won't," Brown said.

At that point, a voice — either that of Brown or a second person — can be heard saying: "What about saying she's a whore?" "Well, I'm going to use that," Brown says...

Two audio recordings of the conversation were released to The Times on Thursday by the police union. On the initial recording, the voice making the "whore" reference appears to be that of someone other than Brown. A union official later produced what he described as an enhanced version of the recording. In that recording, it is unclear whether the "whore" remark was made by another person or by Brown himself.

The union has endorsed Whitman and is spending $450,000 on her behalf.

I could never see Meg Whitman doing porn, so no, i don't think she's a whore.

"In a private conversation inadvertently captured by voicemail"

Why is this a story?

I pretty much thought the same.

Then my mind wandered to....
What if it was a male REPUBLICAN candidate calling a woman DEMOCRAT a whore? It would be making front page news in the NYT.
So I see nothing wrong with it being a small story on cable news and the internet.

I cant think of any condition where this might be considered "news worthy"

Are you kidding. It is a huge story when Whitman allegedly owes someone who worked for her $6K, but this is nothing. The people of California are proving what the rest of the country thinks of them by even having govenor moonbeam representing a major party.

As Jay Leno put it: " Meg Whitman can't be a whore because she hasn't been elected to anything yet." Plus it is silly to try to sell influence that you could easily not ever have.

Regards from Rosie

The underlying political story of this episode is that Jerry Brown won't give out a special pension reform exemption even at the risk of losing important union endorsements. Do recall Whitman got the union's endorsement and she has pledged to exempt them from pension reform.

You are correct. However my sense is that you would be in an uproar if someone said that about Hillary after some political decision.

I would love to know what names Whitman aides have been calling Brown. :lamo

If I only had a dime for every time I heard a conservative say "What if this were a democrat..."

It's a case by case basis. Sometimes people get hit hard for the stupid things they do, sometimes they get lucky and there's more pressing stories in the news that week, but there's tons of stories over the years from both sides and sometimes the person was forced to resign immediately and sometimes they manage to find a way to brush it off. **** happens. Pointless complaining about how the evil liberal media only attacks conservatives is getting more and more tiresome.

Back on topic... this was a really stupid move, but I've heard worse said about random people in my office building so what do you expect. When people think no one's listening they tend to speak a little too freely.

I see no problem with using the term 'whore' depending on it's meaning. Whitman has aides calling people political whores.

If you received a dime for anything it's because a liberal raised a conservatives taxes.

It's not a case by case basis due to the fact you do not call a woman a whore unless you are prepared to get a backhand to the face. Brown is a coward and I don't expect him nor you to understand the concept of decency.

But if a campaign aid called a black candidate a n******, and the candidate agreed, it would be the lead story across the globe. Funny how racial slurs are career enders, yet sexist ones are nuttin' but a thang.

I'd be rich if I had a dime for everytime the shoe was on the other foot.:lamo
