MIAMI — With sexual abuse allegations from dozens of girls in Florida back in the national spotlight more than a decade after they first surfaced, Jeffrey E. Epstein, a wealthy New York financier, unexpectedly settled a civil case against him on Tuesday, a last-minute development to avoid a trial that could have brought some of his accusers to testify about their trauma for the first time.

The courthouse in West Palm Beach, Fla., was set for a legal drama to play out as jury selection was scheduled to begin in the trial, which drew so many news reporters that the case was moved to a larger courtroom. Instead, in an unusual written apology delivered by one of his lawyers, Mr. Epstein admitted to wrongfully suing Bradley Edwards, a lawyer for some of his accusers, who had sued Mr. Epstein for malicious prosecution.

As part of a settlement announced Friday, Dershowitz agreed to drop his claims that the lawyers had behaved unethically. For their part, Edwards and Cassell said they'd drop their defamation suit and even acknowledged that Dershowitz shouldn't have been implicated in the Epstein case in the first place.

In an interview with Business Insider early last year, Dershowitz said he could account for all of the time during which he was alleged to have had sex with Jane Doe No. 3.
"There is no conceivable possibility that it could have happened," he said.

A federal judge ended up striking the claims made in that motion from the court record last year, as Bloomberg BNA reported.

Meanwhile, Edwards and Cassell noted in their statement Friday that Dershowitz had produced travel records to establish he couldn't have been present during the supposed misconduct, in addition to other allegations to refute the claims against him.

"The parties believe it is time to take advantage of the new information that has come to light on both sides during the litigation and put these matters behind them," the lawyers said in their joint statement.

Any man that chooses to defend a hedge-fund multimillionaire in a child sex trafficking operation is a liar at the very least in my book. He can't be trusted to tell the truth if his life depended on it.

It is the perverse good fortune of Alexander Acosta, Donald Trump’s secretary of labor, to be part of an administration so spectacularly corrupt that it’s simply impossible to give all its scandals the attention they deserve.

Last Wednesday, The Miami Herald published a blockbuster multipart exposé about how the justice system failed the victims of Jeffrey Epstein, a rich, politically connected financier who appears to have abused underage girls on a near-industrial scale. The investigation, more than a year in the making, described Epstein as running a sort of child molestation pyramid scheme, in which girls — some in middle school — would be recruited to give Epstein “massages” at his Palm Beach mansion, pressured into sex acts, then coerced into bringing him yet more girls. The Herald reported that Epstein was also suspected of trafficking girls from overseas.

What’s shocking is not just the lurid details and human devastation of his alleged crimes, but the way he was able to use his money to escape serious consequences, thanks in part to Acosta, then Miami’s top federal prosecutor. For reasons that are not entirely clear, Acosta took extraordinary measures to let Epstein — and, crucially, other unnamed people — off the hook.

The labor secretary, whose purview includes combating human trafficking, has done nothing so far to rebut The Herald’s reporting.

Every accused person has a right to a good defense, or are you unaware of how the U.S. criminal justice system works?

There are public defenders for people who cannot afford an attorney, and also many private practice criminal defense attorneys for those who can (or think they can) afford one available throughout this nation.

That resource goes hand in hand with the presumption of innocence which our society abides by.

This is absolutely stunning. You're actually willing to overlook the fact that a man molested as many as 80 underage girls because he had enough money to pay sleazy Costa too take 'extraordinary measures' to get Epstein charged with a misdemeanor. That's simply sickeningly wrong.

I simply note that at the time Dershowitz worked on his defense team Epstein was accused of molesting as many as 80 underage girls. Epstein had a right to a good legal defense.

I also pointed out to you that Dershowitz sued those who accused HIM of molesting one of those girls based on the subsequently shown to be false statements of that particular one Epstein's accusers. Sued, and won a settlement agreement where the opposition's legal team admitted he could not have done the deed.

But be "stunned" all you wish. I stand by the principle that every accused has a right to a good defense, and that they should be presumed innocent until proven otherwise. My defense of Kavanaugh should have alerted you to this fact. :coffeepap:
