Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) on Monday said it's time Republicans "cease being the obstacle" to immigration reform and urged House GOP leaders to hold a vote on legislation passed by the Senate last week.

ush and Bolick argue that passing immigration reform would benefit Republicans on the campaign trail. They note that, in 2012, Republicans received 27 percent of the Hispanic vote, a 40-percent-decrease from a dozen years before that. They describe immigration as a "gateway issue" for Hispanic and Asian voters.

"No Republican would vote for legislation that stifled economic growth, promoted illegal immigration, added to the welfare rolls, and failed to ensure a secure border. Yet they essentially will do just that if they fail to pass comprehensive immigration reform — and leave in place a system that does all of those things."

So pretty much its a loos loose for Tea Party Republicans. Pretty much we should pass this. Its not perfect for the dems or the repubs, but in the long run nothing is perfect. Its a start for both sides and i disagree with many parts of it, but its sure as hell a start and that is something i can agree with, and i think both sides Repubs and dems can agree with.

Nonsense. It is no different than in 1986, amnesty first and then the next wave comes to replace them.

I dislike Jeb more and more each day.

There are two and only two ways to stop illegal immigration: (1) make Mexico's economy much better, or (2) make America's economy worse. It's been the case all through human history that people in poor and destitute places try to make it across whatever border to rich places...and this is regardless of whatever walls there may be.

Nonsense. There are many places in the world with worse economies than Mexico. The key to stopping illegal immigration is strict enforcement of the laws prohibiting the hiring of them. While we have about 20K border patrol agents we have only about 5K agents to deal with 98% of the balance of the country. Look what happened when Alabama decided to shine the light on illegal aliens. About 40% of illegal aliens did not "jump the fence" - they entered legally, found work and decided to (over)stay. Even under the strictest proposed immigration "reform" legislation only "new" hires (at large employers) will be required to go through E-verify leaving plenty of open jobs and adding no additional enforcement/verification of those worker's status.

I have a great deal of respect for Jeb Bush - I believe he's wrong on this bill. He may be right on getting a good bill passed on "immigration reform" - a bit of a misnomer here - but this is not the good bill that Republicans should pass.

And yet if they dont pass this its still a "loss" for them, just a bigger loss none the less.

Republicans not being an obstacle to progress? What a novel concept.

Republicans should be a obstacle to the progression of more illegal immigration. Amnesty encourages more illegal immigration, not less.

Actually these are the only ways of stopping illegal immigration.

1.Crack down on the scum who hire illegals.Treat them no different than we do drug dealers and other criminals who profit from and or use their money for illegal activities. That means toss their asses in prison and make them subject to asset seizure and forfeiture.

2. In order to get any ID or driver's license you present a birth certificate, green card, or certificate of naturalization and social security card. After that require a state issued ID or driver's license in order to the following-

-enroll yourself into school
-enroll your minor kids into school
-apply for welfare, food stamps, section 8 housing and any other tax payer assistance for yourself and or your children
-get a business license,fishing/hunting permit, building permit, license to practice law, food handlers permit, gun license(in states that require a permit to buy a gun),concealed carry permit(in states that require a license to conceal carry) or any other tax payer funded service
-open a bank account, cash a check, use a credit/debit/pre-paid card, apply for a loan,or wire money.
-rent,borrow,lease or buy property
-rent,borrow,lease or buy a motor vehicle.
-get legal documents for yourself or your children.
-get utilities

3.Mandate E-verify for every employer.

4.Repeal part of the immigration and nationality act of 1965 that allows for the chain migration of relatives other than spouse or minor children. This would virtually eliminate anchor babies.

5.Enforce any other laws already on the books.

6.Actually secure our borders.

7.deny citizens of countries we have the most illegal immigration problems with entry into our country until the vast majority of those illegals go home. That means no work, student, tourist or any other kind of visas to citizens of those countries we have the most illegal immigration problems with. After all a significant portion of illegals came here on a visa and deliberately overstayed that visa. .

These solutions would make it extremely hard for illegals to get a job and for illegals to profit from their illegal residence in the US.

Doesn't matter. You're ignoring the drive of people to support their families, to protect their children. It doesn't matter what you do, they WILL find a way across the border. They WILL find places to live. They WILL find ways to make money, legal or not.

Help Mexico get better, and you help America. Ignore Mexico's problems, and those problems come across our borders...and all the wall-building and supposedly-patriotic grandstanding on the planet won't change that.

If you crack down on the scum who hire illegals then illegals can not get jobs.If you make it nearly impossible for illegals to live and use our resources then they will not live here.If you cut off the countries we have the most illegal immigration problems with and secure our borders then there will be less a lot less people coming into the US to stay illegally. I am not worried about stopping all illegal immigration, however with my ideas most of the illegal immigration will stop.We do not need to make our economy worse or Mexico's better.

Um, no, your ideas would not stop illegal immigration.

How many immigrants do you know? How many illegal immigrants do you personally know? I used to work for immigration (for a while after I retired from the Navy). My wife was at one time an illegal immigrant until the Reagan amnesty...and thanks to Reagan, instead of hiding in the shadows like nearly all illegals have to do, she runs a small business, makes six figures, and provides jobs for other people.

Again, it DOES NOT MATTER how hard you try to make it on illegals and those who hire them - because as long as America's a much better place to live than Mexico, they'll come here. That's why, during the Great Recession and the year or so afterward, we had net zero illegal immigration - life turned economically tough, so they went home. There's your proof - look it up.

And one more thing - do you really, truly want America to be a "papers please" nation? Do you really? What does that do to a nation's psyche, that we must always demand "Show me your papers! Verify to me that you're a citizen!" to anyone looking not just for a job, but for the least bit of help? And what about those American citizens who can't prove thoy're citizens? All the homless, so many of the old, so many of the developmentally-disabled can't prove they're citizens. To my mind, any such nation that makes such demands of its people without probable cause cannot be truly free - we'd no longer be that shining city on a hill, but a nation of the suspicious and the scared. We would no longer be America.

Another Dem dog thread where the OP hopes the Repubs are cat-dumb enough to be enticed into passing the amnesty and legalization bill.

How would you know? Our anti-illegal immigration laws and enforcement has been joke so far.

And thanks to Reagan we now have 12-20 million illegals in this country.
If an illegal can not get a job then you removed one of the reasons someone might come here illegally. If an illegal can not rent or buy property or motor vehicle, cash a check, enroll kids or themselves into school, get a legal license, wire money, get tax payer aid, use tax payer funded services and many other things then you remove several other reasons for someone to come or stay here illegally.

And one more thing - do you really, truly want America to be a "papers please" nation? Do you really? What does that do to a nation's psyche, that we must always demand "Show me your papers! Verify to me that you're a citizen!" to anyone looking not just for a job, but for the least bit of help?

Most of those things are are things that either you already have to show an ID for or things you should have to show an ID for. So your nazi analogy is nothing more than a load crap.

And what about those American citizens who can't prove thoy're citizens? All the homless, so many of the old, so many of the developmentally-disabled can't prove they're citizens.

Hose ****. Every American should be able to get their birth certificates and SS cards if they lost them.States store birth certificates.

To my mind, any such nation that makes such demands of its people without probable cause cannot be truly free - we'd no longer be that shining city on a hill, but a nation of the suspicious and the scared. We would no longer be America.

Again most of those things are things you either already have to show an ID for or things you should have to show an ID for. So your nazi comparisons is invalid.
