"Vice President JD Vance’s office said the Secret Service requested that water levels in an Ohio river be raised to accommodate a birthday kayaking trip and the Republican was unaware. Vance was on a family vacation in south-western Ohio last week, and spotted by locals kayaking down the Little Miami River on his birthday on August 2, when he turned 41. The Secret Service requested that Army Corps engineers change the outflow of Caesar Creek Lake, which feeds into the river, to “support safe navigation” of Vance’s security detail, The Guardian first reported. An anonymous source told the newspaper the request was also made to create “ideal kayaking conditions” for the vice president, according to the report.

“It’s outrageous for the Army corps of engineers to spend taxpayer money to increase water flow in a river so @VP can go canoeing when budget cuts to the National Park Service have severely impacted family vacations for everyone else,” ethics lawyer Richard Painter, who served in George W. Bush’s administration, reacted in a post on X.

Certain accommodations have been made for the vice president’s family on other trips around the globe. During a recent trip to Italy, the Roman Colosseum was closed to the public so that his wife, Usha, and their children could take a tour, sparking anger among some tourists. The Taj Mahal also was closed to visitors during the Vance family's visit to India."

I have done my share of canoeing. A canoe doesn’t draught much water. Kayaking takes less, IIRC.
 
i was wondering when this world shaking issue would show up here. Apparently SS was in motorized craft, and being one that has taken this exact trip many times in my life(live right near the area), there are stretches of the river that at spots are so shallow flowing over rock, you have to get out and drag your canoe or carry your tube past.

Look at the  massive drop the reservoir took!

How much tax payer money could have been spent anyway? It doesn't take much to adjust the gates that they're always adjusting anyway.
 
My God the waste of tax payer money by this regime is astounding! $1B for the private jet reno, $130M to deploy the NG and soldiers in LA,, the paving of the Rose Garden, $40 M for the military parade and heaven knows what for this. So much for waste , fraud and abuse.

Exactly. It's the same amount spent on the salary of the person on shift at the spillway.
This is one of those 99 problems situations, and this ain't one of em.

I do recall the right wing having a melt down when the Obamas went to a Broadway play. Short memories now.

The issue is not how much did it cost to "open the gates" The issue is the gates are there to protect the water levels, and this seems a frivolous reason to open them. The fact that the SS didn't see it as a deal big enough to apprise the VP is another issue.
 

Looks like they brought the lake down a whole couple inches to normal summer pool. The Corps built and maintains their lakes for flood control, is what they tell us the times they draw a lake down and adversely affect a spring spawn.
 
And here we are talking a change that is magnitudes less than drought or heavy rain flooding conditions. This little slow moving river can flood certain places like you wouldn't believe at times. Or be pretty damn low.

You'd be pressed to find a spot deeper than your head most of the trip, with a lot of it super shallow.
Seems it was let flow just enough to make the shallow trickle past spots able to float a small boat past without bottoming out.

We cannot have JD or SS getting their feet wet! The embarrassment!

What excess costs are there in lowering a lake a couple inches to normal summer pool? The Corps opens and closes gates all the time, however they see fit. Their deeper lakes are often drastically dropped in the winter.

Of course, trump using that name did the opposite - both directions, cutting and spending. Oh, look, JD Vance had a birthday. He made the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers raise the water levels of a river so he could have a nice kayaking trip." At least he didn't have a hundreds of millions military parade.

Would they "see fit" to open them for you? If not, JD should vacation elsewhere, where he can be protected. I'm sure he was not under the delusion that he could just live a normal life in the public sphere while serving as VP.

Has he recovered yet from the chaos he created with a recent "surprise" visit to Disneyland? Rides were closed down, protests erupted, and let's remember that what might have been the day of a lifetime for other children was ruined. I'm sure JD's kids will remember it fondly.

He needs to grow up and give his supporters a break from having to constantly stretch reality to excuse him.
 

He's a member of the ruling class, like it or not. I've had to deal with roads closed because Pritzker was making an appearance to brag on himself. Would they close roads for your convenience?

Which two occurences? Closing a road compared to drawing a lake down a couple of inches? I would say the lake draw down didn't inconvenience anyone.
 
Vance can afford to go kayaking anywhere he wants. The Truckee is full, and it has lots of whitewater.

No, it's not an issue, but it does illustrate what American Royalty thinks and does.

JD needs to take off the makeup and put on his big boy kayak.
