Japan's first stealth fighter jet successfully took to the skies on Friday as the country joins a select group of world military powers wielding the radar-dodging technology.
Technological super power Japan, despite strict constitutional constraints on the use of military force imposed after World War II, has one of the world's most advanced defence forces and the development of the stealth fighter comes as it faces new security challenges in the form of China's expanding force posture.
The domestically developed X-2 jet took off from Nagoya airport in central Japan on its maiden test flight as dozens of aviation enthusiasts watching the event erupted in applause as it lifted off into the clear morning sky.
Television footage showed the red-and-white aircraft roaring into the air, escorted by two Japanese military fighters that were collecting flight data.

I think Japan needs to change its constitution. Why should it be hampered while rogue countries like NK and Iran do what they like?

'Cause WW2.

It's not fair, but that's how Hiroshima crumbles.

Most important take away.
Stealth jets look far cooler in black.

I think Japan needs to change its constitution.

They passed a suit of laws this past September, several of which just went in to effect last month, which greatly increase Japan's ability to engage in cooperative defense efforts.

In conjunction with those laws taking effect they passed the largest defense budget in their post-war history.

They're definitely moving in the right direction.

They need to scrap Article 7 or 9, whichever that one is, of their Constitution.

I agree, but they're going to have to get there slowly.

Still many Japanese fully committed to pacifism.

They should have the same rights as every other country.

what other country is preventing japan from so modifying its national constitution prohibiting the assemblage of an offensive military force?

Are you being obtuse or what? You know precisely what I meant by that.

The right to bomb and invade others as they please? ;)

Offense is sometimes necessary, and they need to throw off the WW2 constraints FORCED on them.

Well considering that is was WE who forced it on them... :2razz:

if i did, i would not have needed to ask the question

are you then recognizing that the only country holding japan back from re-arming itself is japan?

I suppose this plane is far too expensive to use for kamikaze missions. I would think Japan would be spending its defense money on a missile defense system, considering what Dennis Rodman's boyfriend Kim is up to. Maybe it's relying on systems based on U.S. ships in the area.

Captain Obvious.

Japan needs to get over the guilt trip and forge ahead. Today's Japan is not the WWII imperial/military government that was outwardly projecting power.

Because asia is still terrified of japan, and the same reason germany relies on us protection rather than building massive armies. Germany and japan still scare the world, yet trade with the world heavily, it benefits those countries and everyone else when they only have a small defense force rather than a full military.

Maybe in another 30 years there won't be anyone alive to remember what they did, and they can build full scale modern militaries, but for now doing such will cause all their trading partners to run away from them.

In 30 years it'll be too damn late.
