The man who was twice considered to be the front-runner for SCOTUS nominations has resigned his seat on the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, ostensibly to take a new job at Boeing. The word around Washington is that he is resigning in protest of the Bush Administration's mishandling of the Jose Padilla case regarding his "enemy combatant" status.

I guess we can scratch Luttig off the list of future candidates for the Supreme Court.
