Japan has announced its withdrawal from the International Whaling Commission (IWC) next year, and will resume commercial hunting in its territorial waters and exclusive economic zone from July.

It will also cease whaling activities in the Antarctic Ocean, according to an official statement released Wednesday, and hunt species with so-called "healthy" population numbers.
"In its long history, Japan has used whales not only as a source of protein but also for a variety of other purposes," the statement said. "Engagement in whaling has been supporting local communities, and thereby developed the life and culture of using whales."
The move to resume commercial whaling has sparked outrage among conservation groups

The West's ability to bully Japan is breaking down as China asserts itself and as the West continues to break down.

And this story proves that how exactly?

It does not, I am pointing my finger at where the truth is in my educated opinion. Whaling and criminalizing child porn are two places where Japan did not want to cave in to Western demands but they did because they thought that they had to.

They have reversed themselves on whaling.

This is interesting.

What? What? Are you really saying that resuming commercial whaling in Japan is a good thing, an expression of their sovereignty? And it involves China?
You're losing it...

You are a smart guy, if you desire to figure out where you went wrong you know what to do.

I never thought I would see "whaling" and "child porn" in the same sentence.

International Whaling Commission (IWC)
LOL

That is so not what I thought of when I saw "IWC" the thread title in the "new threads" sidebar. LOL

The whales they hunt have well recovered in population, properly managed whaling is perfectly fine. Hunting a whale is no more wrong then ranching cattle.

Buy American cars. Don't buy Japanese cars.

Japan has been cheating on whaling for years.

Why is them liking to eat whale this big of a deal to you?

Plus if the doomsdayers are right and the oceans are dying then shouldn't we eat the oceans now, while we still can?

Since they have shown their wiliness to cheat already I would prefer they don't decimate the population. Its sort of like handicap parking . There is a parking space there because everyone doesn't park there. We have whales today because everyone agreed to stop killing them. I'd like whales so stick around to my grandkids can enjoy them. And by enjoy I mean visually not on a dinner plate.

Why was there a moratorium on whaling in the first place? Was there an international consensus that whaling activities throughout the world was going to drive whales to extinction? Did Japan actually adhere to the terms of that moratorium? Or did they continue their whaling activities under the false premise of "research"?

Has Japan now said "F*** it, we're hunting whales and we really don't give a damn who knows it,"?

We now live in a world where making money is far more important than any environmental concerns. And those who make the money have all the power they need to overcome any and all objections.

Don't like the earthquakes and flammable tap water in Oklahoma? Too bad for you. Fracking is here to stay.

Big fan of National parks? Enjoy them fast. There are resources to be exploited and that is what is going to happen. Out of our way, tree huggers.

You like elephants? We are going to let millionaire big game hunters kill them every day for several thousand dollars. Get over it.

You think lead ought not be in household paint? Well, that's a shame, cause we happen to like it. It makes more money for us.

Hey baby! Asbestos is gonna make a comeback bigly!

And now that we have bought and paid for a U.S. Supreme Court to our liking, we're going to decide once and for all that stupid little people cannot sue corporations ever again.

A good read for those who want to Deep Dive:
Japan, The West, and the whaling issue: understanding the Japanese side
https://scholar.harvard.edu/files/amycatalinac/files/japan_forum_whaling.pdf

A Taste:
This article seeks to understand the dispute from the side of the Japanese. It
seeks to answer fundamental questions such as why the Japanese government is
so committed to the resumption of whaling, upon what principles its whaling
policy is based, and why it remains within the IWC when it could easily opt
out. It will show that, as a nation with great anxiety over resource security, Japan
views with disfavour any attempt to bar access to these resources. The idea that
whales deserve special treatment or total protection from human use is not widely
accepted in Japanese society, refiected in the lack of public support for conservation movements, particularly those dedicated to the protection of wildlife. This
lack of a domestic constituency to support the cause of the anti-whalers constitutes the most important reason for the Japanese government's opposition to the
moratorium.
And yet Japan eventually did comply with the moratorium. In examining why it
did so this article suggests the need to look beyond the threat of US sanctions to
the international legitimacy and responsibility that Japan gains from compliance.
It further suggests that the need to be perceived as a responsible member of the
international community continues to infiuence the formation of Japanese whaling
policy, and this need also accounts for the variations in policy between the prowhaling countries. The article will conclude by discussing recent developments in
the whaling dispute and considering their impact on the IWC as an organization
dedicated to the protection of whales.

Keeping the West happy by giving in on things Japan cares about just is not what it used to be.....

Why is it necessary to ensure that certain animals do not disappear from the earth?

Just as why is it necessary to make sure that some obscure languages do not die out?

We do not need whales. If the Japanese love to eat them so much, then they will presumably take steps to see that whales continue to be around.

If no one wants to speak language X, what does it matter if it disappears?

i've had enough of Japanese whaling "research." sink the ships. rescue and jail the crews.

That would be called piracy.

we'll call them privateers. if it stops Japan from whaling, that's fine by me.

You'll need a letter of marque before you can be called a privateer... ;)

i have a pretty serious fear of drowning at sea, so i'd be a piss poor sailor / privateer, i think. however, if it involved sinking whaling boats, i'd almost consider it. some things are more pointlessly destructive and useless than whaling, but it's definitely up there. i'd like to see it banned and the nations who poach sanctioned significantly. eat something else. i have a bit of sympathy for Inuit tribes, but they aren't really the problem.

The Minke Whale is not even threatened, it is a “least concern” species in terms of population, same as deer.

We now live in a world where making money is far more important than any environmental concerns. And those who make the money have all the power they need to overcome any and all objections.
Every single human activity has environmental “concerns”. It’s just the costs of a one hundred percent clean environment is literally genocide. That’s a non starter.

Don't like the earthquakes and flammable tap water in Oklahoma? Too bad for you. Fracking is here to stay.
maybe inexpensive oil is worth earthquakes. Also fracking doesn’t make water flammable.

Big fan of National parks? Enjoy them fast. There are resources to be exploited and that is what is going to happen. Out of our way, tree huggers.
No one has proposed closing national parks, many want increased economic activity in national forests and BLM lands which were originally established for managing economic development. There is nothing immoral about logging or mining.

You like elephants? We are going to let millionaire big game hunters kill them every day for several thousand dollars. Get over it.

Managing elephant populations protects them. The countries that permit elephant hunting which are South Africa and Zimbabwe have the largest populations of elephants. Elephants are not endangered in any of the legal hunting countries. This is emotion over science

You think lead ought not be in household paint? Well, that's a shame, cause we happen to like it. It makes more money for us.
no one today would buy lead based paint. If you sold it you wouldn’t make money. No government needed

Who’s bringing back asbestos?

This is not a philosophy held be anyone except for you.
