The first division 1 college conference to do so. This is a letter from the Yale Athletic Director Today

Wednesday, July 8, 2020

Dear Bulldog Nation,

Today, the Council of Ivy League Presidents confirmed the cancellation of all
2020 fall semester athletic competitions due to the ongoing challenges created by COVID-19. The Ivy League Presidents explored many different options, and ultimately decided that the institutions’ campus-wide health precautions designed to prevent the spread of COVID-19 would also make it impossible for varsity teams to compete in intercollegiate competition before the end of the fall semester. The well-being of students is their highest priority.

The past several months presented challenges for everyone, including our student-athletes. When contemplating a path forward for fall sports, among the considerations the Ivy League Presidents weighed were the
increasing prevalence of positive COVID-19 cases, the travel necessary for competition and the potential risk of exposure to COVID-19 during travel.

When considered together, and after consultation with public health experts including some within our Yale community, the Ivy League Presidents were united in their approach to the fall sports season. Athletics is a long-standing intrinsic part of the American college experience. As a former student-athlete, head coach, and long-time advocate of the leaders that collegiate athletics develop, the prospect of not seeing our student-athletes compete this season is an unimaginable reality. But what is more unimaginable is putting our student-athletes in the position of choosing between their health and playing sports.

Our student-athletes, like many of you, would like clarity and certainty about the path forward. Unfortunately, no one can predict how COVID-19 will continue to impact our community, our country and our world. Our Athletics Department is ready to support our student-athletes in determining how best to look toward the brighter future we believe is ahead.

Since COVID-19 began impacting our communities, our Yale Athletics Department team has been planning for a wide range of options based on different scenarios. We anticipate further direction from the Ivy League on July 14 regarding plans for student-athletes to train on campus this fall.
In addition, we are developing plans for the start of competition in the spring semester, depending on the public health situation at that time. We will continue these internal discussions, evolving our scenario-planning based on new data and working diligently to provide the best support possible to our student-athletes in this unique time.

We are proud that our Yale Athletics Department continues to support the global response to COVID-19. As you may have heard, in March the Lanman Center was converted into a field hospital and is now being used to assist in the development of a COVID-19 vaccine. So, in a meaningful way, our Athletics Department is rising to this moment.

These changing times demand each of us to summon the courage, resilience, strength and optimism displayed by our Yale student-athletes on the field of play. And while we may not see them compete for Yale this fall, we are committed now more than ever to finding new ways to support their continued growth and development.

Thank you for your support of our Bulldog Nation,

Vicky

What a travesty. I suggest in your solidarity of support for Trump you start licking the rails of every rail you can find to prove this whole COVID thing is a joke and hoax only to stop Trump's re-election bid. Trump doesn't believe in COVID, why should you? He doesn't wear a mask because COVID is only a hoax.

What's more important? Proving Trump right or your life? We'll leave that for you to decide.

How does this thread, which has nothing to do with politics, cause such seething TDS nonsense.

There is no Trump Dick Sucking (TDS) nonsense going on here. Why would you suggest such a thing?

what do your two stupid posts have to do with the fact that a major college athletic conference has cancelled the entire fall season through January?

They have to do with COVID and Trump thinks it is all a hoax and is all a scam to prevent his re-election.

There are plenty of other threads to spew your hate. Now run along!

credible proof needed. I think you are lying. In fact almost all your posts concerning Trump are dishonest

it is pavlovian. You could start a thread about Vera Wang's fall collection and the TDS crowd would bash Trump in it

I don't see how there can be college football.

Trump is wearing a mask right? Oh yeah, he's not. He thinks it is a hoax.

Or what? What you gonna do? Typical Trump supporter, thinking they are bigger than they are.

You're right. I actually agreed with one of these whackos the other day in a thread and he went off on a tirade against me. They are animals. They can't control their instincts.

I don't see how there can be college football.

While the IVY league is not exactly big time in terms of D-1 Football, I suspect many ADs at the major league big revenue conferences (such as the big Ten) will be looking at this decision by the Ivies very carefully and that will weigh heavily in their decisions.

Tragic. Was looking forward to that black national anthem being sung before the game

Anyway, do not be surprised to see college students in class all day on Saturdays anyway at a lot of universities. It is how they are planning for now to navigate having classes and maintain social distancing. Smaller classes from the butt crack of dawn til late at night six days a week.

I never thought it was possible for college football this year. The chance of them getting infected on campus or bringing it back to campus is too high. There will be too many infections based on the high number of college players throughout the country. It will be bad optics. I heard a study that predicts 150 Corona cases in the NFL if they played a full season. Now think of how many more college players there are. Given such a high number there would certainly be some players hospitalized and potentially die.

So what, like Yale and Harvard aren't going to play? Oh the humanity.

lol

This is significant because it's the first of many cancellations unfortunately. Many schools are cutting athletic programs. This is the first domino.

There is no need for that. A lot of fun social activities that many of us enjoyed up until this point are going away and will not be coming back for the foreseeable future. I mean, we cannot even safely gather around a table and hang out with friends or family anymore, much less enjoy a (non-rerun) game of football.

Yes, heaven forbid that some activities that could be spawning grounds for the COVID virus are delayed or cancelled. What's more important is that circle jerkers need to see these players play and pass along the virus so others can die for their enjoyment. I swear the "COVID is a hoax" nutballers couldn't have handled being in America during World War II. They can't help Americans by staying inside, let alone fight in a war.

More big time than that. Think this was to be the first season the NCAA was letting college athletes make money merchandising themselves. Will cost the players a mint in unearned mailbox money.

Nowhere did Turtle say in this thread that COVID-19 was a hoax, and that the cancellation should be undone and the teams be allowed to play. Nor did I.

People get to vent their frustrations about the difficulties that this pandemic is placing on their pocketbook, their social lives, and their overall emotional health.

So stop trying to control how people feel, or make fun of them for doing so. You are being a bully.

I'm not controlling anything. I'm commenting. Just like you and Turtle and the rest of the COVID complainers have a right to complain about the measures taken to prevent the spread of the virus, I am afforded the SAME RIGHTS to show your complaining is pathetic and whining. Seems you are the one being a bully saying I don't have the right to comment and to STOP IT. Funny I never said you or any others don't have the right to complain but you tell me to STOP IT. Seems you are the one trying to control the speech here.
