It's Time To Arrest Ultra-Orthodox Jews Who Delay Flights Over Seating [W: 66]

There are 2 ways to handle this:

1) They identified themselves as haredis while they were purchasing their tickets, and told the airline in advance they were not allowed, according to their religion, to sit next to a woman. If that was the case, then they, as well as all the other passengers on that flight, deserve the right to sue the airline.

What kind of a logic is that? If the airline company starts accommodating Haredis for their allergy to women, where does it end? airlines won't be able to accommodate everyone, business will be disrupted, and so many lawyers would be screaming discrimination and emotional distress in courthouses.

Oh Jeez...

...this proves yet again how all major religions are a COMPLETE AND TOTAL WASTE OF TIME.

They are for the weak and/or the ignorant and/or the desperate.

Don't arrest them, just boot the idiots off.

Some book written thousands of years ago tells you you cannot sit next to a woman if you want to be in this dumbass God club...so you do it?

How ridiculous.

What if they find additional passages to this god club manual and it tells you to rape a woman a day...will you do that as well?

Angst teen detected.

Okay, guys, here's the opinion of someone who actually works in the business. I started off as a flight attendant and worked my way up in the industry. When I was working as cabin crew Orthodox Jewish men were notoriously known for creating problems such as refusing to seat next to women or blocking the aisles while praying. It was before 9/11 so safety regulations were not as strict and it was extremely difficult and time consuming to solve these problems. It was also before people paid extra money for specific seats on board which gives them more legroom, or some other advantage. In the old days it was relatively easy to sort out the seat swapping issues. Our biggest problem back then was to get them to sit down and stop blocking the aisles while meal service was underway. I can't tell you how many times I've heard "You're only doing this because I'm Jewish". It gets really old, really fast.

Nowadays people get to choose their seats at the time of reservation and some people chose to pay more money at that time to get a specific kind of seat. There is no way in hell that they're going to give up that seat for any reason. The promise of a refund will not make any difference, they want the seat they paid for and most people will not budge, understandably so.

As to the OP, this happened on an EL-AL flight. Orthodox Jews and Jews in general tend to favor this airline for obvious reasons. Non-Orthodox Jews are getting as sick and tired of the Orthodox Jews' behavior as everyone else is. I'm not at all surprised this happened and I can tell you it will keep happening as airlines will keep making people pay extra for every damn thing. On some airlines, we're up to the point where it can cost up to a 100 extra bucks to book a specific seat on board. Add to that the additional stress involved in airline travel these days and you get people that are at the end of their rope by the time they finally take their seats on board the aircraft. Physical assaults on cabin crew and ground staff are at an all time high across the industry.

I know for a fact that cabin crew do their utmost to solve these sorts of problems as quickly as possible, because today more than ever an on time departure is absolutely essential, or the aircraft loses its departure slot and gets booted to the back of the queue by air traffic control. My personal opinion is that it doesn't matter who you are or what religion you are, if you create a disturbance on board to the point of significantly delaying take off you should be escorted off the plane. End of.

I have no problem with tossing them off of the plane if they refuse to comply---but that is horrible reasoning. What is that even supposed to mean?

It's kinda ridiculous that somebody can't sit next to a girl but it's a ok to hop on an airplane. If anything you'd think the opposite would be true

Yes really. Besides they also commonly have a personal hygiene problem.

Right! and don't forget their big noses, control of all media and the love of hoarding money. What a douche bag thing to believe.

As I have mentioned, this is not about Jewish people. This is about a group of people who happen to be Jewish and who believe that treating women as something like an animal is ok. Well it's not.

That many of these men refuse to wear deodorant while wearing heavy wool in searing heat is unpleasant to be around.

The former is a fact, the latter is my opinion.

There are white people and Vietnamese people that don't wear deodorant. Some black people don't wear deodorant, It's not a 'Jewish' thing dude.

Surely you have a point? You desperately want this to be something it is not.

In another part of my life I traveled 3 weeks a month domestically. I logged over 2 million miles during that stretch. I saw people frequently treating flight attendants and ticket agents like ****.

Really hard job. Baggage claim agents had the worst of it.

I used to tell flight attendants and ticket agents this joke (got me lots of upgrades it did.)

What's the difference between a flight attendant and a toilet seat?

Wait for it...

A toilet seat only has to deal with one asshole at a time.

LOL

So true!

Totally agree, that goes with any religion and any kind of person- if you refuse to sit in your assigned seat then you can walk to your destination.

They could also buy the seat next to them too then they don't have to sit next to anyone. If not then tough ****. like you said .. walk.

Its amazing that in this day and age a flight full of people cant make a simple accommodation for a few individuals. This would have taken...what...30 seconds to resolve ahd the aircraft not been full of apparently bigoted angry hate filled little ****heads that would rather sit on a tarmac for an hour than move a few seats.

The OP implies the orthodox jews are the douche-bags in this story. Really?

Really?

What if they said they didn't wanna sit next to black people?

So.. did they all wait to get on the airplane before announcing their beliefs? Seems like this could have been handled at the ticket counter.. "Excuse me but we are deathly afraid of the female race, Please set us in a group as there is safety in numbers"

Delaying a flight should only be a felony if someone's life was at risk...
...no matter how idiotic the beliefs.

On the other hand, this does show that hard liners of any religion are defective, and lack common sense and decency.

I don't think they should be arrested, they should be escorted off the plane though.

Why? Because it doesnt fit your belief system?

When your belief systems start inconveniencing other people, your belief systems are stupid and need to go.

If possible people should be allowed some limited accommodations for their situation, whether it be beliefs or family, pets, etc on flights but people also need to be aware that these should be things that they bring up as soon as possible not after they are aboard. In fact certain things should be thought of ahead of time whenever possible.

I can understand accommodating one or two people on a flight for this type thing, but it sounds like we're talking more than just a couple. That would be a lot of moving and as has been pointed out, many times you pay extra for preferred seats which can be spread around the plane depending what you're on. That would make it a lot more difficult to accommodate the needs of many people, especially when flights are full, as they normally are lately
