Again, Mitt's words in 2012 are proving to be right 10 years later. Proud to have worked for him in 2012 and 2018.

A decade ago, Mitt Romney went on CNN and made a statement that was widely perceived as a major mistake.

"Russia, this is, without question, our number one geopolitical foe," Romney, who would be the Republican presidential nominee in the 2012 race against President Barack Obama, told Wolf Blitzer in March of that year. "They — they fight every cause for the world's worst actors."

Obama and his team pounced on the comment, insisting that it showed Romney was hopelessly out of touch when it came to the threats facing the US.

In the third presidential debate between the two candidates in October 2012, Obama went directly after Romney for that remark. "When you were asked, 'What's the biggest geopolitical threat facing America,' you said 'Russia.' Not al Qaeda; you said Russia," Obama said. "And, the 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back, because the Cold War's been over for 20 years."

Mitt Romney is a lying shill and crook.

China is America's #1 foe -- it is America's largest, most powerful, most populous and richest foe.
China's economy is more than an order of magnitude larger than Russia's.
China has more naval ships than America does.
China has hypersonic missile technology more advanced than what America and Russia has.
China's economy is already larger than America's by purchasing power, and will soon even be larger on nominal basis.
China is claiming large swathes of ocean by building artificial islands, which even the Soviet Union never did.
China is looking to dominate all of its neighbors and take territory from them.
China is building new bases around the world.
China has a plan to displace the American economy and the world's leading economy, and displace the American dollar as the world's international currency, which could destroy America's economy and its standard of living.

For once, Obama got the upper hand on the politics not entirely fairly - while the Republicans did it a hundred times, like when their entire Romney convention motto was to misrepresent what Obama said about 'you didn't build that'.

Russia wasn't and isn't our "greatest geopolitical foe", but they're currently the most belligerent. Long-term sights on China are necessary. Those don't include derpy trade wars with no exit strategy or.....strategy.

It's a foe, yes. Obama was too flippant about it. But that doesn't make the polar opposite right.

????? who didn't know that russia was our #1 foe ??

No, Romney was not right. Yes, Russia is one of our major geopolitical foes - but China is far more dangerous than Russia, to us and everyone else on the planet.

Until China starts invading countries I don't believe that's correct.

Romney was also tough on China.

Many people did not feel they were. We were still looking more at radical Islam - another thing Republicans politicized demanding Obama 'say the phrase' while he tried to navigate the issue. This was before Putin invading Ukraine, after the Bush 'looked into his eyes' period.

Sounds like you're ignoring ten years between 2012 and 2022, particularly the last FIVE, four of which where the tone on Russia was set by Trump.
But sure, go ahead and blame Obama. 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆

Mitt Romney was right about Russia.

He was still a terrible candidate. Less filthy rich politicians with regressive economic policies shouldn't be too much to ask.

I don't disagree.... truth be told, I don't even know why Obama even ran for a second term. What'd he do in his 2nd term? What did he even attempt to do?

It was 4 years of nothing that led directly to Trump.

Well, "being tough on China" isn't the same as claiming Russia is our #1 geopolitical foe. A foe, yes, but #1? I don't think so.

And it depends on what you mean by "invading." For example, economic incursion isn't much different, save for the militaristic aspects.

...assuming of course China has the economic wherewithall to complete its global incursions.

That's just disgusting - and totally wrong. Leave it to someone on the left to inject homophobia into the discussion.

Romney was right.....

Yes and no.

I don't think it's appropriate to use data from 2014 on to talk about the world in 2012. Russia-US relations were in a difficult spot but there was no indication at the time that Russia was going to become the menace that it is now.

China is most definitely the greater threat, and it's not even close. You can show this by how little we hold them accountable for anything they do, if we even try at all. They are literally running concentration camps and harvesting organs from people to sell on the black market and no one says shit beyond token condemnation. They make no substantial moves at all to check them.

Trump was the only one that was trying to undercut Russia where it would actually hurt them but Europe decided they were cool with being reliant on Russian natural gas.

President Donald Trump has signed a law that will impose sanctions on any firm that helps Russia's state-owned gas company, Gazprom, finish a pipeline into the European Union.

The sanctions target firms building Nord Stream 2, an undersea pipeline that will allow Russia to increase gas exports to Germany.
The US considers the project a security risk to Europe.

Both Russia and
the EU have strongly condemned the US sanctions.

Russia wasn't and isn't our "greatest geopolitical foe", but they're currently the most belligerent.

China has puppets like Little Rocket Man to behave more belligerently on its behalf, by carrying out nuclear missile launches meant to threaten the American homeland.

China is building up its forces to outsize the US Navy and Marines.

China is currently engaged in a nuclear buildup to radically expand its nuclear arsenal.

China engaged in irresponsible virus research which escaped from its laboratory and infected the rest of the world, causing >4.5M deaths worldwide. Rather than seeing this as a threat, Democrats embraced this as a godsend, because it gave them an opportunity to seize power at home and tighten their grip over the American people.

Long-term sights on China are necessary. Those don't include derpy trade wars with no exit strategy or.....strategy.

China is the one engaged in a trade war.

The phrase exit strategy is meaningless here, because it's an existential threat. You're just chomping on buzzword salad.

It's a foe, yes. Obama was too flippant about it. But that doesn't make the polar opposite right.

China intends to supplant America as the world's leading superpower. It's Russia which is not America's polar opposite. Russia is not the USSR. The world's leading socialist totalitarianists are holed up inside the United States, harassing Americans from Washington DC and from their midst, rather from across the ocean.

If I want to find the most toxic anti-American socialist totalitarianists, I don't have to go searching all the way in Moscow -- I can find them right here on this discussion board.

He's wrong because China is in actuality and fact the US' number one geopolitical foe. Russia merely happens to be the most immediately inconvenient.

Actually, it's Putin....not Russia. It was ten years ago and it is today.

Its really China going forward. But our current problem is defined by the simple fact that we no longer have the ability to fight wars on two fronts. That is all done. Since it is unreasonable to suggest we take on China now, we have to take out Putin or at least knock his deranged ass back to Moscow where it belongs.

Put an air cap over Kyiv and dare Vlad to shoot it down or try to breach it or make good his bluff to end the world via nukes so he can have Ukraine. Its the Ukraine government Vlad is after today. Its not Donbas and its not NATO at least not today. You want to stop Vlad dead in his tracks....turn his whole little party into a waste? Don't let him topple the Ukraine government.

Your only foe is your Industrial Military Complex and a key faction within the Intelligence Agencies.

Every President up to and including Reagan told you that post WW2 , and you were too weak to stop it .

Since then you have had puppet Presidents with the obvious exception St Donald .
