Armenia recalled its ambassador to Israel today, issuing a rare diplomatic rebuke over Israel’s arm sales to rival Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan’s military deployed Israeli-made drones against Armenian forces during the heavy fighting that erupted in the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region, an Azerbaijani official told a local Israeli outlet this week.

The two former Soviet republics are locked in their worst round of violence in years. More than 100 have died this week in the contested territory, which is officially part of Azerbaijan but run by ethnic Armenians backed by Yerevan.

"For us, Israel's supply of ultra-modern weapons to Azerbaijan is unacceptable, especially now, in the conditions of Azerbaijan's aggression with the support of Turkey,” said Armenian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Anna Naghdalyan."

Armenia is a small vulnerable Christian country in the Caucasus Mountains. It cannot win against Islamic Turkey which is using the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh as a proxy war in support of the Islamic Azeris. While both Azerbaijan and Armenia were both under the thumb of Moscow, the only friction was to be seen on the wrestling mat at sports events. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Azeris have lost patience with the ethnic Armenians who run Nagorno-Karabakh which is within the Azeri territory. The Turks have taken on a role as an Islamist state in the region, even bringing in Muslim activists from Syria of all places to do their fighting on behalf of their Muslim brothers in Azerbaijan. The Russians have left behind a vacuum in the area and seem paralyzed by the Turks into inaction. The Armenians cannot expect help from the Russians who fear Erdoğan, Islamic Turkey's champion in the region. Into the mix come the Israelis who like money and have a thriving business not just in Jaffa oranges these days but also in weapons which they have tested on the unarmed Palestinian civilians over the decades. The Israelis must be a little embarrassed to have been found out as suppliers of weapons to Muslims in the Caucasus for the purpose of killing Christians. They say they value relations with the Armenians but do not wish to talk about their weapons business. They belong to the confraternity of arms dealers who care more about money than the lives of children and families who are wholly innocent victims of the killers. Among this group are the Americans and the British. Meanwhile, as usual, the rest of the civilized world looks on and does nothing.
