Israel Builds a Laser Weapon to Zap Threats Out of the Sky

JERUSALEM — After two decades of research and experimentation, Israeli defense officials now say they have a working prototype of a high-powered laser gun that can intercept rockets, mortar shells, drones and anti-tank missiles in flight.

Officials said that the system performed successfully in a recent series of live fire tests in the southern Israeli desert, destroying a rocket, a mortar shell and a drone, and prompting a standing ovation from officials watching the action onscreen.

Jewish space lasers are real!

Finally, Jewish Lasers. MTG will be thrilled.

It actually sounds pretty cool.

And in her excitement, she will say something profoundly stupid and ugly, such as that the Jewish Space Lasers are being used to turn kids gay.

It seems to be what she lives for.

Does it make PEW PEW noises? If not, 0/10 trash this monstrosity.

I don't know. When a gay couple throws a costume party you would be surprised how many show up dressed as darth vader.

A lot more than two decades.
Laser weapons for defense started under Reagan's (1980's) "Star Wars" Strategic Defense Initiative, only SDI was intended to knock out threats that traveled into and out of space, whereas
the Iron Beam system is functional at around 15-20 miles.
One of the main reasons the "space" lasers wouldn't work was their intended targets were too far away.

BS!

These sneaky Democrats are preparing to steal the next elections using again foreign help!

(In an ideal world, I would not add that the above is sarcasm but in today's America I want to make sure that some Trump conservatives will not take my reply seriously)

No no, they turn frogs gay, and then when kids go to the pet store, the gayness aura of the frogs in turn turns them gay.

More seriously, these technically aren't space lasers, since they aren't in space.

Because getting blown up by terrorist organizations is bad for the innocent people blown up, their friends, their families, and their country. People don't like getting blown up.

I though your post was a bit deeper. Sorry, my mistake.

Your standard reply when someone disagrees with something you said. It doesn't fit well because if you're talking about shallow or stupid comments, get a load of your response to Goshin:

Excellent. Improved defensive systems are a good thing.

Unless you are silently staking out the evil position that Israelis getting blown up by Hamas/Hezbollah rockets (supplied by Iran, etc) is a good thing, you staked out the jaw-droppingly ridiculous position that if you have a defense system and come up with a better one, that's bad.

Of course it's a good thing to have a better defense against incoming rockets, which is the ever-****ing subject thank you very much.

The other big problem with space lasers is how to power them. They use many megawatts of power and nuclear power plants orbiting over our heads was not deemed safe for obvious reasons.

There really is no such thing as purely defensive systems because stopping an enemies attack means you are free to attack them at will. A foolproof ABM system is the most powerful offensive weapon of all.

A nuclear reactor in space that deorbits wouldn't make it back to Earth without burning up on reentry.
Plus, if the laser is in space it would not NEED megawatts.
It's when it is on the ground aiming at something in space that megawatts are needed.

Really?
Or does it simply force new technology to thwart it?
Well yeah.
But that's always the cycle.

And until the penetration aid or whatever shows up, less death.

Reflective coating on projectiles?

Solar works much better in space. Much much better.

Burning up and raining radioactive nuclear material on whomever is below sounds good to you?

The 1977 Soviet satellite Kosmos 954 was supposed to monitor ocean traffic using radar—a technology that works best at short distances. For this reason, the craft traveled in Earth’s low orbit, where solar panels alone could not provide consistent power. And so, the satellite was equipped with a small, efficient, yet powerful nuclear reactor fueled by approximately 50 kg of weapons-grade uranium 235. Within weeks of its launch, Kosmos 954 veered from its path like a drunkard on a walk. The Soviets tried to eject its radioactive core into a higher orbit by way of a safety system designed for that purpose. But the safety system failed. In January 1978, Kosmos 954 burst into the Western Canada skyline, scattering radioactive dust and debris over a nearly 400-mile path. The cleanup and recovery process, which took nearly eight months and started in the subarctic winter, found that virtually all of the satellite fragments were radioactive, including one that was “sufficient to kill a person or number of persons remaining in contact with that part for a few hours.”

There are limitations for lasers as weapons... weather being one them. However, firing a shot from a laser is cheaper the an anti-missile missile. They won't be getting rid of their other weapons in the 'iron shield' defense, just have this added on.

Ok, everybody hear that? Important safety tip.
