Israel's latest announcement of more than 900 new illegal settlement units in occupied East Jerusalem "threatens" talks with the Palestinians, a senior Palestinian official has said. The units in Gilo, near the Palestinian town of Beit Jala, are in addition to the 1,200 settlement homes approved by Israel on Sunday.Al Jazeera's Sue Turton reports from Gilo, East Jerusalem.

I should have guessed that's where the youtube video came from. Sorry, but I consider AlJ extremely biased on issues involving Israel. If you find a decent source, I'd be happy to read the article and discuss the issue, but I don't see anything to work with here as I do not trust the source even a little.

I looked at that one. It claims that Israel did not agree to a freeze and that Palestine entered into negotiation knowing this.

Still, I think it's a bad move. Israel is spending its international political capital by pressing forward with settlements. While I can understand keeping the Golan Heights for national security (military) reasons, I don't see the justification in expanding settlements.

I agree that it was planned to go ahead but with recent peace talks being announced i believe they should of halted the construction and go ahead for these new settlements especially when knowing that a major point for the Palestinians is stopping these expansions and with them continuing to them this is just giving the Palestinians more sway in the talks on this point.

It's pretty clear by now that Israel will do whatever the **** she wants to do irregardless of how it affects other people or their very own international standing.

Let's remember that the Israeli government also needs to deal with popular sentiment. To get this process started Israel had to release about a hundred murderers etc. which created a lot of ill will in Israel. So this seems like a little bit of an offset to tell their voters that they won't be patsies in the negotiations.

Oh, please. Israel treats Palestine with kid gloves compared to what the rest of the world would do to a terrorist state on their border.

If the settlement construction begins soon, then I think Israel has gone beyond placating domestic expectations of toughness.

another humiliating act from Israel. it's like a slap to the face of Palestinian negotiators and international community.
What a joke this whole thread is. Where were the Palestinian negotiators and the international community when a rocket was fired into Israel recently.

In Syria there is a civil war with 100K people killed. Just today who knows how many were killed in Egypt, yet there are folks here who think the world should be focused on some housing permits.

Why not post all the parking tickets given to Palestinian drivers over the past year, call it a war crime and let's hear what the EU has to say.

i don't think Israel needs international community when she has US behind her. like every year in UN, international community 161 countries vote for settle the conflict, Israel, USA and 4 other unknown countries vote against it.

anyway, Israel is not a gentleman as you guys think:

Richard Goldstone is an author of the “Goldstone Report,” an investigation of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza between December 2008 and January 2009. It found that Israel had engaged in a “deliberately disproportionate attack designed to punish, humiliate and terrorize a civilian population,” for which responsibility lay “in the first place with those who designed, planned, ordered and oversaw the operations.” It said both Israel and Hamas may have committed crimes against humanity in a conflict that saw a ratio of about 100 Palestinian dead (including many children) for every one Israeli.

A report that is contentious to say the least; and has been challenged many many times on this site.

This statement is divided into two, ~1000 units that will begin construction soon, its in east Jerusalem and in settlement blocks like Gush Ezyon and Ariel, according to the media, this was agreed upon with the Americans and the Palestinians as part of the concessions each side made in order to climb down from the tree which prevented negotiations till now.

The other part is about ~1000 more housing units which are to be reviewed by the development committees, it means it will take several years until actual construction will begin on these units, this is the part that caused the whole fuss.

IMO, I believe the Israeli government, at her effort to make pretend that she won't bend over for the preconditions of the Palestinians, caused a huge injustice for us Israelis. Instead of freezing expension of settlements for a few months, the government decided to release murderers of Israelis, human garbage who did atrocities like butchering an old man with an ax, people who shouldn't see daylight. These human garbage was accepted with celebrations in Ramllah as heros. Yup, it takes a hero to slaughter an old man with an ax. Does building housing units for a population which is less than 20% of Israel, while there is a huge lack of housing development in Tel Aviv metropolitan area, really that important that we should set free murderers? In my opinion, no. I object this move by our government or any future release of prisoners, moreover, if peace is discussed Palestinians shouldn't even raise such demands, our society pukes human garbage not embrace it, I expect the Palestinians to do the same.

Anyways, the talks started yesterday, I heard on the radio that they were "serious and meaningful". Lets hope that the border issue will be closed in a few months and the whole settlement expansion thing will stop being an obstacle.

Ja! Und why not, considering historical dealings with Jews over hundreds of years, would you not rather take an attitude as Israel does.

Israel should do whatever is in Israel's best interest short of criminal acts to serve Jews and other citizens. As for it's own international standing, there has been bias, prejudice, and intolerance for Jews past and present with unjust and lies. Why should Israel capitulate to please those that single out Israel among all nations with preservation in mind?

Condemning Israel and ignoring the behavior of other states and nations is simply the easy thing to do.

Look to the treatment of Arabs-Christians in other Middle Eastern States before you condemn one that has suffered and been faulted enough.

I would call collective punishment not "kid gloves"

You ignored the " By Comparison"

But assuming you are on point, what collective punishment?
Hamas treated Fatah members in Gaza worse by far collectively and they were supposed tobe allies and friends. Sunni and Shiites treat each other worse collectively by far and they are Muslims.

Egyptians----Syrians--Iraqi -Kurds, Afghans- Pakistani and so on treat Muslims of differing political/sectarian/tribal position collectively worse by far, they are dying in the streets as we speak. With all that there are those continually turning a blind eye and censoring the only democratic country, the minute and usually compassionate by comparison, Israel.
