MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somalia is in "a state of war," the country's Islamic leader said Thursday, as bodies lay in the streets of strategic villages where the U.N.-backed government is fighting to wrest control from the religious movement that has seized much of the country.

They've always been there, actually.

I am having a hard time following this story, is it Islamic extremists fighting against a moderate Islamic government?? Its kind of hard to follow. Not your fault, its just poorly written.........

Yes, but they were not always militant scumbags. This comes from brainwashing and various control tacts inflicted upon them by a few a radical assclowns.

Meanwhile Ethiopia started a war against the Somalian opposition siding with the Somalian government, while Eritrea seems to side with the Somalian opposition.

Re: Islamic hatemongers have reached Somalia

They've always been there; however, the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) seems to be becoming increasingly radical. Some nations allege that the UIC is working with al-Qaeda, which is part of the reason why the UN Security Council isn't doing anything...the other is that Qatar wants all foreign troops out of Somalia, but some nations on the UNSC have been arguing that the interim (and weak) federal government of Somalia called the Ethiopians to come to their aid, so technically, they must let the war run its course. The Ethiopians are only 30km from Mogadishu, the capital, and they've seized the strategic town of Jowhar. So it seems that the UIC is eating its words, as earlier it vowed to bring jihad to Ethiopia, but now Ethiopia and the pro-government troops seem to be advancing rapidly...however, the war's not over yet.

A UN report places the number of Ethiopian troops at around 7,000. There are about 2,000 - 5,000 pro-government troops, bringing the government side to a total of 9 - 12,000 troops. Ethiopia also supplied heavy weaponry as well. It is rumoured that Uganda may be intervening on the Somalian government's side.

The UIC has Eritrean support, with 2 - 4,000 Eritrean troops plus 4 - 8,000 foreign jihadists, and, including 10 - 30,000 militia members, has a distinct numerical advantage, at 16,000 - 42,000 troops. The anti-government side also has heavy weaponry.

Chances are that the UIC is withdrawing to mass its troops to protect the capital. It will probably be a bloody fight on both sides for the capital.
