Is Wii winning the console race? - Video Game Feature - Yahoo! Video Games

Of all the pundits that tried to call the console race before Christmas, few predicted the Nintendo Wii, with its modest hardware and oddball control system, would still be lining up the punters in March. 436,000 Wiis sold in January, beating the Xbox 360 and PS3 handily, and there's no sign of the pace slackening. The handheld DS is doing nearly as well, tightening Nintendo's 18-year stranglehold on the portable market and capitalizing on its first-rate software selection. A total of 635,000 new Nintendo systems made their way home with eager U.S. purchasers in the supposedly quiet post-holiday period.

For all the video game fanatics on DP :P

Though I'm not a video game fanatic - or rather console game fanatic, Wii's move was strategically brilliant.
Better graphics, better sound, I don't think ppl would've really paid top dollar for already realistic graphics and sound. But intuitive user friendly input method, now there was something greatly lagging. The target instead of just the teenage computer savvy generation then moved up and through the whole family to even grandpa and grandma being able to get in on the action.

Xbox and PS were nothing new, Wii that was creative and new - the gamble greatly paid off.

the 360 is going to come out of this smelling of roses. The Wii is pretty cool, and is going to do well; but it's going to come down between PS3 and XBox. PS3 will most likely end up taking the market again, but their slow start and unwillingness to pander to gamers (wherein Microsoft will give gamers everything they wanted) will cost them. Microsoft will make major gains in the Japanese markets, especially with the investment in the RPGs (can't wait for Blue Dragon) MS has made this gen. Plus one of the best selling games in Japan a few months ago was Gears of War. Shooters, mostly FPS but this also applies to TPS, tend not to do so well in Japan but Gears did great, it pushed some systems off the shelf. Blue Dragon will be a system seller too, a pretty nice looking traditional JRPG was a good choice.

Sony sits in limbo land, 600 buck price tag and technology not everyone necessarily wants. The biggest concern (besides the price that is) is the lack of games. Launch saw a huge lack in PS3 games, there was Resistance which remains to be really the only game worth getting on the PS3 right now. With not a lot of prospects on the horizon and Microsoft setting up for another Halo run (Halo 3 is being pushed as a September release), things look rough for PS3. It's Sony, so they'll get through it. They will eventually get consoles out there, there are some great first party games Sony brings to the market, they will most likely take over in pure numbers at some time; but MS is going to be the winner. They will have made enough gains this generation to really challenge Sony.

With the Wii, it's not looking to challenge Sony and Microsoft. The Wii is definitely going to sell large, it's going to be the party console. It's cheap, it's fun as hell, and if you don't like making a Mii you have no heart. I think it's going to be a console most people have, and it's definitely going to offer up some of the best fun without the graphics of the PS3 or 360. But because it focused on something completely different, and doesn't have the graphics and hardware that the PS3 and 360 has, it can't really be compared to the other next gen (guess they are now current gen) consoles.

360 FTW.

I think the Wii looks like more fun and has more games that I would be inclined to play. I like how it seems more interactive, like getting off your butt to play some games.

I don't have any of the current gen consoles, but I have a Gamecube and PS2. I played Zelda: Twilight Princess at a store Wii display and it was AMAZING! Using the Wiimote to swing Link's sword etc. But then I got the game for Gamecube. I don't really know when I'll get a new console but I hope Wii gets some RPGs or something, I'm not a sports gamer (unless I have someone to play with). The other two are kind of too expensive and if I got one they'd have to have some Fantasic PS1 quality classic RPGs! So right now I'm cheering for Wii.

The PS3 and Xbox 360 were severely overpriced and now they are paying the price for that. Hopefully the Wii does win the console race simply because of how affordable and fun it is. Not everyone has an extra $600 floating around to spend on a game console when it will most likely be obsolete in a few years.

This is a good point.

Another thing to think about is that the next gen console games have a base msrp of $60. Game makers like EA are banking on this new price model, hoping the higher of developing for the PS3 and XBox Live will be offset. That is why they are still standing by PS3. If Wii does win this round of the console war they will have to rethink this model.

Ha Ha, not only are all of you politics nerds you're also video game nerds!

Just playing. :2razz: Go Nintendo, everyone thought they were done, but they are pulling it off. From the last generation I only bought a Gamecube, which was highly underrated. As for the new systems, PS3 is way too expensive and has no games and the only XBOX360 game that I think is really cool is Geometry Wars. Gears of War? Meh. It all just seems like more of the same.

Microsoft is going to take this round I think, with Nintendo close behind. Even though all three are the "next gen" nintendo's is truly in its own category. While all three will hit the hardcore gamer, Sony and Microsoft will take it more. However Wii will massively win the casual and kid gaming markets. As well, the 360 and Wii make great complimentary units for roughly the same price as the PS3.

Like many before have stated both Sony and Microsoft made one very big mistake. They made their machines so high tech, so advanced and they give it such an outrageous price that it has became impossible for the average player to buy.

That's true, I'm pretty well off but I wont' spend that kind of money unless there are lots of games I like. Plus though I will never admit it again I am a Zelda fanatic.
The Wii is pretty fun, we even had my 75year old mother playing with it, considering she won't even touch a computer that was pretty impressive. The Wii is supposed to be my kids but I swipe it every chance I get.

A girl who likes video games is a girl after my heart. I think I love you SB!

Lol, thanks! ^^ Are girl gamers really that rare? Since I was...well...limited with my activities growing up because I'm half-blind I had to do something with my time. (I did do stuff with friends though) And people are usually surprised...just wondering. A few of my best friends were guy gamers. :)

Oh yeah, not a lot of girl gamers out there. Now if we find out that you're a Twins fan we might have to set up a date.

I am also a girl gamer although I prefer the old school games.
Maybe cause I grew up only with older brothers who were gamers because none of my girl friends like games. In fact they get pissed when their men play too much. I would only get pissed if they didn't pass the controller

Cool, I've had Atari, NES, Genesis, SNES, Game Gear (Oh the miraculous Giant Hand Held I could see!) N64, GCN, PS2 and my brother had the XBOX but I did not care for the controller, even the S was too large for my hands.

There are some fantastic titles on the SNES! That has to be the best system ever made, quality game-wise. I missed the PS1 because my mom thought we were too young to have CD games and they'd get torn up, but I made it a point to buy Xenogears from Ebay to play on my PS2 and I loved that game and I know the PS1 had other amazingly deep RPGs I just never got to play :(

And ditto about passing the controller, lol!

And RoC, I love playing sports outside (even though I can't be on a real team) but I don't watch it or keep up with the pros, sorry! ^_^

I think i will to go by a wii soon. Im happy to wait till more games are out and the 360 or ps3 are cheaper i dont know which one i will buy at that point.

I think the wii is alot of fun but i dunno if i could get the same obsesson as playing some proper games.I remeber dumping my girlfriend when i was 12 so i could play final fantasy without interuption.

PS3 is loosing too many exclusive titles. Devil May Cry 4 is going to be out on the 360 as well (simultaneous release no less) which leaves Metal Gear 4 and Final Fantasy 13 as the big exclusives left to PS3 at this point. Ace Combat (one of my favorite series) is heading over to 360 with Ace Combat 6. If Sony doesn't get on the ball, they are going to be left behind by the 360. They'll still sell consoles (and I'll probably get a PS3 at some point), but MS is going to make major gains especially in the Japanese market this round. If MS can secure more of what traditionally used to be Sony exclusives, they win hands down. They will have the exclusives themselves and will have usurped Sony's biggest titles.

The Wii is great, but it's not in the league of PS3 and 360. I have Zelda for my Wii (which is such a super awesome game...can't wait for Paper Mario to come out next month); but my 360 gets the play. The Wii is more the party system, which is great and will be great fun. But the 360 is really at the forefront of gaming. It has the best graphics, online play, push the physics packages, etc.

Also, whomever said Gears of War was more of the same...I've reported you to Homeland Security as I am sure you are a terrorist. That is a baseless claim, but I'm stickin' to it.

 It was alright, so was Lost Planet, but not cool enough to drop $400 + $60 on. I think I can wait at least until Halo 3, or maybe NCAA Football 2008.

The only sports games I play now are Hockey. After Madden 2000, the football games became too obtuse.

Gears of War is one of my favorite games on the 360 (of course, Burnout Revenge ranks up there too even though it was more of a port, but I love the Burnout series). I beat it on all difficulty levels, and since I have a buddy in OK we always look for Co-Op Live games to play. It was great because on the hardest difficulty level we had relatively no problem since we had emergence hole locations, etc memorized by the time we worked our way to that difficulty. Great great great game, super fun to play 'cept for the car level in the 3rd act...that sucked and they would do well never to put another level like that in the sequels.

Hmmm, I might rather have my wife po'd than have to pass her the controller. Hey how about MULTIPLAYER!

And guys like to underestimate their skill, meanwhile if you manage to find a few on Halo2 via X-box Live they usually kick some ***.I know a few girl gamers...although I wouldn't really call them that per se.They play sometimes
