I was in a conversation on a different platform when someone used the term "Uncle Toms" to describe minorities that voted for Republicans. Believing that this was a derogatory term to use against minorities, I asked them why they would call them that. They basically said the term wasn't derogatory. What do people think? Is this term racist, derogatory, or not?

Yes. An Uncle Tom was what the other slaves called "loyal" slaves, aka, "house niggers".

Hugely offensive.

Yes

Where are you from that you haven’t heard that term before?

Derogatory? Sure. Accurate though? Probably.

When 90% of African Americans have consistently voted Democrat for over 40 years running there are only two conclusions you can draw. One, Democrats are better for black people than Republicans are. Two, black people are stupid. If you believe that it's number two, then you are by definition a racist. If you yourself are black, and you still gravitate towards #2 then every other African American in the country has every right to be disgusted with you and to say so.

Of course I have heard the term. I was asking others' opinions about it since there are apparently people that don't think its wrong for them to use, because the "uncle toms" don't vote Liberal.

For 10% of black people, the rich and or socially very conservative (or other possible reasons, ideological and otherwise), voting Republican is in their best interest. For 90%, it's Democrat.

I don't see a reason to hate either. Politics is not a one issue thing and different stuff is more or less important to different people.

Other..... content always matters and most things are circumstantial...

its not racist because it doesnt apply to a whole race, i guess if somebody used it in a way to refer to a whole race it could be but typically by definition this is an individual tag

as for derogatory, yes it very much can be based on usage and that is the common usage of it but it doenst have to be

in your example it seems derogatory. as it is being used to chastise the people its applied too. But its weird that that same person claimed it was derogatory. Im guessing they dont now what EITHER word means. Uncle tom and derogatory.

The position put forth by many on the left that Blacks should all vote the same, inherently and by default has to be based off of those that put forward that position that Blacks are not intelligent enough to make their own choices in life, because they are "voting against their own interests" if they don't vote Democratic party.

Saying all Blacks should vote the same... Now... That's a racist position.

You REALLY REALLY should stop talking about race because every time you do i guarantee the majority of people here right left and center just smack thier foreheads at the pure stupidity you post. People with your views are factually part of the problem with race relations in america. Your ignorance pollutes the waters that the rest of the educated, honest and objective people are swimming in. The monumental stupidity in your claims is staggering and makes this black guy laugh so hard. Its so funny because of how wrong it is but its also draped in such ignorance of you thinking its right that its hysterical.:lamo

It isn’t racist because it doesn’t insinuate that one race is inferior. But it is meant as an insult so it is definitely derogatory.

People vote what’s in their own interest. To expect all black people to vote for the same candidate is ridiculous because black people, like every one else, are unique and have their own unique circumstances to be concerned about.

Derogatory yes. Racist no.

I stick to the actual definition of racism which is a belief that a race is inherently inferior to one’s own. Nazis were racist because they believed Aryans were a master race. Some fool who simply doesn’t like all black is a bigot but not a racist.

voting Republican is in their best interest.
First, not it actually isn't. Even if you're wealthy it's not actually in your own best interest to vote Republican. That's just what short sited stupid people think.

Second, Regardless, if you're wealthy enough to even think that it would be in your own best interest and you're willing to sell the rest of your race down the river to a political party this now overtly racist and actively implementing the policy of white nationalism then you a disgustingly selfish human being and the rest of your race still has a right to be disgusted with you.

If you're already rich as ****, and you're allowing the Klan to assume power over the white house just to get a tax cut then you're a terrible person and you should be ashamed of yourself.

I don't see a reason to hate either. Politics is not a one issue thing and different stuff is more or less important to different people.
When you make a choice to directly benefit yourself at the expense of millions of people who are hurting much much worse than you that is called greed. Cruelty. It's not okay, and you don't get to excuse it by saying it's just politics and opinions. If you're socially conservative(ie Christian) you should know that Greed is one of the seven deadly sins.

Funny stuff... you only have 2 choices and here they are. If you don't like you are a racist. Where have we heard this kind of crap before? :peace

In how we use the term "Racist" in the modern sense, which seems to be a very flexible definition.... yes, it is racist....

And at the VERY least derogatory.

Why I call it racist is because it is an insult that is based and dependent on the persons race...

Though technically calling someone an Uncle Tom is not declaring racial superiority over someone.... but again, you are using someone's race as a means to judge and insult them.

False... Blacks voted democrat when the democrats were/are the party of the KKK anyway...

Never was about racism, it is about socialist economic policies that the black community has been sold into.... and that slowly became culturally enforced by the black community. And democrats have taken advantage of that.

Highly offensive.

Trump called one of his Celebrity Apprentice candidates "Uncle Tom" and it had to be explained to him that he needed to not do that again.

*facepalm*

False Dichotomy Fallacy. I can think of many other conclusions for why African Americans tend to vote Democrat, including that they may enjoy receiving government handouts, that they may PERCEIVE Democrats as better for them, that the false re-writing of American History influences them, and so on... It goes well beyond just those two options...

If you believe that it's number two, then you are by definition a racist.
Correct. One would be committing a Composition Fallacy, in this case Racism, because it deals with both people and genetics.

If you yourself are black, and you still gravitate towards #2 then every other African American in the country has every right to be disgusted with you and to say so.
Not only ever other African American, but every other person... No matter if it is a black person or a white person making claim #2, they are asserting a Composition Fallacy, in this case, Racism.

It's calling someone a traitor to their race. How is that not derogatory. To a certain degree it could be considered racist because the term assumes a black person is suppose to act and behave a certain way.

Yes, calling someone an "Uncle Tom" is also a racist comment. It is committing what is known as the Composition Fallacy, and is specifically racism because it is a composition error involving both people and genetics.

I thought we were all Americans, with the freedom to make our own choices, and we keep hearing how we aren’t supposed to look at skin color because we are all the same.
But some people of color still look at the color of fellow Americans skin. WTF?
