In politics nothing is co-incidence. And diplomacy is the ultimate media for sending messages within messages, third party messages and fake messages.

During the Iranian Hostage crisis Canada and the United States had become near enemies as various "issues" were raised on both sides of the border. Canada fell far short of the 'normal' language of messaging. It was termed a "trench" by political observers, the "worst era is history". Nobody mentioned war but you get the idea.

We have since learned the two counties had never, ever been more close. We learned that Canada was hiding a stable of US diplomats; saving them from murderers in Iran. So, to lessen suspicion Ottawa stared a pissing match with Washington in public. They started arguments on water rights,fisheries etc that had been resolved decades earlier!
What's really nuts, anyone knowing Canada - US relations, should have seen that nothing like that had ever happened before - even when Canada was fighting Germany and the USA was neutral. It should have been obvious - especially with both government and party leaders, that the fight was right out of WWE. Even more surprising was the fact Canada staged a national elecion and the "fight" nor the hostages was ever an election issue and no one noticed!!!

No Putin traveling to China shows submission, and in a period of armed conflict it's equal to a school yard taunt "See who my friends are! They have missiles too!"
