Is Peres trying to convince Palestinians to refuse direct talks?

Former justice minister Haim Ramon of Kadima met earlier this month with Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat in an attempt to convince him to refuse direct Middle East peace talks, Israel Radio on Thursday quoted a source as saying.

The two met at the American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem on July 8 . The source wholeaked news of their talks to Israel Radio said he happened to be in the hotel for a separate meeting, and was close enough to hear every detail of the conversation.
According to the source, Ramon told Erekat that he had been sent as an emissary of President Shimon Peres. Erekat was surprised by that piece of information, said the source, adding that Ramon confirmed he was indeed a third party in the matter.
Ramon reportedly proceeded to tell Erekat that the Palestinians must not enter direct negotiations with Israel, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would inevitably refuse any demands posed to him.

It's clear that the israeli govt. is not interested in a just two state solution, Everything coming out of Netanyahu's mouth was a lie. The realities on the ground is, that on a near daily basis Palestinians are being kicked out of their homes and land in the west bank and Jerusalem, Israeli settlers are torching Palestinian's agriculture and attacking old men and women and roadblocks are severily constricting Palestinians from going about their daily lives.

As I recall, the Palestinans had a chance when Olhmert was in for this, and they are the ones that blew it.

1) There is no basis for the claim beyond the Haaretz article.

2) Peres is the President, he is not part of the government, and the minister is a minister of Kadima, a party from the opposition.
How could this assertion, which I find ridiculous and surreal, imply on Netanyahu's claims for peace? Answer: It could not.

The Palestinians should agree to direct bilateral negotiations. I suspect that the alleged account is little more than a trial balloon for a coming Palestinian rejection or stalling of direct talks (possibly with Palestinian demands for preconditions), even as such talks are key to reaching a peace agreement.

There is no concrete evidence that PM Netanyahu is not prepared or eager to begin direct negotiations. Rumors do not constitute evidence. The Palestinian leadership should make the courageous and necessary decision to commence direct negotiations.
